CONTENT OF THE COURSE:

English for Specific Purposes (for geography) - ESP - work with specialized texts, audio and video, vocabulary build up

Academic English  - EAP - presentations and  discussions, academic vocabulary 

Grammar -  only specific areas

No textbook. I have prepared study materials - handouts which are available in IS. I expect you to print them out and bring them to seminars.

OBJECTIVES

  • building your specific vocabulary for geography in reading and listening activities
  • discussing topics that are useful for your exams JA001 and JA002
  • practising speaking and presentation skills in academic context
  • revising specific grammar features of academic English
  • moving towards B1+ or B2 level skills needed for reading, listening to and talking and writing about geographical topics

PRE-REQUISITES 

- entrance level B1 !!!
Use a diagnostic test (type JTEST  on  https://is.muni.cz/auth/predmety/katalog?fakulta=1431).  With lower level you may find it too difficult to participate and work reasonably well. With higher level you may have different expectations, so consider registering for a different course, e.g. JAZ03, Výběrová angličtina JA003, or a course from Autonomous Learning section. CREDITS - IF YOU MEET THE REQUIREMENTS:

  • attendance is compulsory - you can be absent twice in the semester
  • homework is compulsory - completion of activities before and after sessions
  • credit test in Week 13

The course is not obligatory, though it is recommended  as a preparation for the JA001 and JA002 exams.
