Foreword: The most clinically important disease of the breast is breast
cancer. It is the most common cancer (excluding skin tumours) in women in the
Czech Republic and worldwide. In 2020, 2.3 million women contracted breast
cancer, and 685,000 women died from it. At the end of 2020, 7.8 million women
worldwide had been diagnosed with breast cancer in the past 5 years, making it
the most prevalent cancer (according to the WHO). In the Czech Republic, 7-8
thousand women are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. Mortality ranges
from 1 to 2 thousand, so it is clear that breast cancer treatment is effective,
and surgery has an irreplaceable place in it. Given the above, it is essential
to recognise breast cancer at the earliest possible stage, to distinguish it
from other, less serious diseases and to know the basic principles of its
treatment.
