At this meeting we will discuss how the course is built, why is it so and what outcomes I aim to achieve with the help of my amazing team, and my newsroom. We will set up social media for our course altogether. We will set together the plans for the course. We will have our first newsroom meeting on the topics we would like to cover throughout the course. So, please, think about the topics you see that are worth covering from different angles. We will brainstorm together, become a team and make the world a better place story by story. At the first meeting, we will also map your experience in creating media content, and we will play on your strengths. We will create together social media presence and discuss the plan of what and how to share there. Also, who are our target audience on our outlet's page and social media? Do's and don'ts.
We will examine how to write an analysis or a classical opinion form. We will look into how to build solid arguments. And how to make sure your piece has the centre thesis. We will have a newsroom meeting on how you would like to continue regarding your topic. We will set up a plan. We will set a deadline. We will decide who does what.
Everyone will get a chance to show the result of their hard work. We will look at the pieces as a group and share feedback and positivity. The plan of how to spread the knowledge about it on Twitter, FB, Tiktok. How to make it to the audience! Doing the final edits and sending it to be published on our page.
We will discuss what is a portrait story, how to write it, what to keep in mind. We will look into some of the portrait stories that might be of inspiration to you. We will brainstorm together how to open your topic from the portrait story angle. Who to interview? How to write it? What additional material to take? We definitely need photos, but maybe a small video? Keep in mind that you need to promote your story on social media, so you probably need to think about it already when you are in the field.
This week we will not meet in person, you should meet with your team and discuss how is the portrait story going. How far you are with it, what type of help does the writer need, and who will help them? I am a zoom-call or an e-mail away to them who need my guidance.
With the help of your teammates, you should be now in the editing end of your story. You should meet as a team once again to discuss on the story, what it needs and how you should solve some of the issues. We will not meet in person, but I am a zoom-call or an e-mail away.
By this lecture your stories should be polished and ready to publish. But before that we will go over them as a super newsroom, you will present the portrait story to your colleagues, who will provide feedback and positive comments. The team would also explain the promotion. By the end of the lecture, we should send the stories to be published on our outlet.
We will look into the opportunities reportage offers, whether it is photoreportage, videoreportage or - my personal favourite - written reportage. Let's brainstorm what can we do on your topics as a reportage.
This week we will not meet face-to-face because you are working on your reportages. You will be meeting with your team to discuss what the person who is writing the reportage needs and how they want to continue. I am a zoom-call or an e-mail away.
The deadline for reportages is on 19th of April 2023. There is no meeting on 20th April because of the faculty day!
After all that we have gone through and seen, it is time to write how this project affected you as a journalist, as a person, as a student, as a member of the society. We will discuss in the lecture of how formulate the whole self-reflection into a longread. All teammembers will write the reflections and you should join your forces. We will discuss the details at the meeting where you will have time to have a brainstorm with your team of how to approach this task.
By this time your longreads should be half ready.
