Learning objectives - what we will learn in this chapter:

1. What is the danger of chronic limb ischemia

2. What is the difference between the long-term prognosis of patients with intermittent claudication and chronic limb ischemia

3. What are the most common causes of acute limb ischemia

4. How to treat vascular injuries

Estimated time to study: 120 minutes

Guiding questions:

1. What is the etiopathogenesis of atherosclerosis

2. Basics of vascular anatomy

3. Principles of the most common imaging methods (sonography, CT examination, magnetic resonance imaging, angiography)

4. Basic surgical procedures in vascular surgery (arterial dissection, anticoagulation, endarterectomy, bypass surgery, extra-anatomical reconstruction, amputation)

5. How to proceed in case of vascular injury (hemostasis, tourniquet, direct compression, pressure points, revascularization)

Introduction (what we will learn in this lesson):

This chapter on vascular surgery covers chronic and acute vascular occlusions as well as arterial injuries. In many cases, it is a threat to the limb or even the life of the patient. Therefore, these patients should be treated in specialized vascular centers that offer a full range of endovascular and angiosurgical methods, as well as sufficient experience and information about the possibilities of current medicine to provide the patient with the maximum possible care. The chapter brings you an overview of current options for diagnostics and therapy of these diseases.
