Introduction to Global Challenges
The aim of this course is to introduce students into the topics of global challenges and their conceptualization in the sociology, political sciences and environmental studies. The course is divided into three blocks in which the global challenges will be presented through the lenses of three disciplines. Following issues will be discusses: fake news and disinformation, radicalization and extremism, non-democratic regimes, contemporary state conflicts, risk society and concept of risk in Sociology, nationalism and citizenship, global displacement, global challenge of gender inequality, unsustainability and its roots, inequality and environmental justice, climate change, biodiversity and land use.


After completing the course, a student will be able to:
- identify the main contemporary global challenges
- interpret the global challenges while using the perspectives of three disciplines
- write essay about the global issues while using the appropriate theory


Course requirements

The grading is based on the following assignments:

·         10 % - responses to questions (see below). Students must submit at least 10 out of 11 responses (10 points). The responses must be based on the required literature (sumbitted by Monday 10 am).

·         60 % - three timed essays (3 x 20 points).

o   First timed essay: students will receive three assigned topics on October 4 covering the topics discussed in the first block (Social global challenges). From three topics they choose one and write an essay which they will submit by 23:59 on October 5. In the essay, they must work with academic literature (at least 4 texts). The length of the essay is to be 800 - 1000 words.

o   Second timed essay: students will receive three assigned topics on November 8 covering the topics discussed in the second block (Political global challenges). From three topics they choose one and write an essay which they will submit by 23:59 on November 9. In the essay, they must work with academic literature (at least 4 texts). The length of the essay is to be 800 - 1000 words.

o   Third timed essay: students will receive three assigned topics on December 6 covering the topics discussed in the third block (Environmental global challenges). From three topics they choose one and write an essay which they will submit by 23:59 on December 7. In the essay, they must work with academic literature (at least 4 texts). The length of the essay is to be 800 - 1000 words.

·         30 % - final written exam covering topics from the readings and the lectures (30 points).
