Interactive Syllabus

The study of identity from a sociological perspective touches upon the boundaries of other disciplines in the social sciences, addressing issues of race, gender, class and other interactions, postcolonialism, globalization, exploring the links between nationalism, ethnicity, etc. Modern identity studies, on the one hand, aims to move away from clichés and stereotypical approaches, but on the other hand, it has a number of theoretical limitations (Brekhus, 1998). Based on the history of the development of knowledge about identity in modern sociology, we consider its visible and invisible dimensions, which lie in the plane of the individual (the study of the "I" - Cooley, Mead) and the collective (identity in organizations, teams, spatial-cultural or professional communities). The concept of identity helps to explore communities and the process of forming unities, mutual recognition, diversity and similarities (Bauman, 2000). Taking into consideration the intersectionality of identity studies, this course is rather propaedeutic in nature, and aims to provide a general definition of identity, approaches to the study of the subject, and to provide inspiration for further theoretical or empirical research among those who are interested in this topic.
