Copyright Exceptions in the Digital Age

The course will introduce the systematic structure of limitations and exception in copyright law. Participants will be able to distinguish between the European ‘closed’ list approach and the US fair use doctrine. The course will cover the interesting issue of the gaps in the legislative framework with respect to new digital technologies and participants will also learn how to critically reflect on the application of copyright exceptions to technological and artistic innovation. Students should read the indicated core readings before each class.
