DEBATING IN ENGLISH (CJVC_DE )

Aims: 

  • to learn how to build clear, effective and evidenced argumentation,

  • to get to know main tools of persuasion,

  • to develop students' negotiation skills.

The emphasis is placed on the development of students' analytical and critical thinking within discussions on a wide range of topics on current social events, including multiculturalism and intercultural competences.


Teaching methods:

dual mode: debates in small groups online + fulfillment of written tasks posted in Interactive syllabi in IS

Assessment:

  • active participation (80% attendance) 

  • a written report and reflection: the report will summarize the key points of debating that the student has learned in the course and contain examples from seminars; the reflection will comment on how successful the student has been in fulfilling the key points of debating in seminars and in which areas they still need to improve

  • mini-research on a specific debating format and presentation of findings, i.e. background, procedures and rules (could be supplemented by a video example)
