TWO HOME ASSIGNMENTS FOR NEXT SESSION

I. PREPARE FEEDBACK ON TWO OF YOUR COLLEAGUES' ABSTRACTS:

  • LENKA IS GOING TO REVIEW DAVID'S AND ANDREA'S ABSTRACTS
  • VIKTORIJA IS GOING TO REVIEW HINDREK'S AND LISA'S ABSTRACTS
  • DAVID IS GOING TO REVIEW ELISKA'S AND SEBASTIAN'S ABSTRACTS
  • ANDREA IS GOING TO REVIEW VIKTORIJA'S AND DAVID'S ABSTRACTS
  • HINDREK IS GOING TO REVIEW LISA'S AND ELISKA'S ABSTRACTS
  • LISA IS GOING TO REVIEW ANDREA'S AND LENKA'S ABSTRACTS
  • ELISKA IS GOING TO REVIEW SEBASTIAN'S AND ANDREA'S ABSTRACTS
  • SEBASTIAN IS GOING TO REVIEW HINDREK'S AND VIKTORIJA'S ABSTRACTS

The feedback must include the answers to the following questions:

1. Does the abstract have a structure? (background, purpose, methods, findings, discussion)?

2. Does the abstract include general academic and discipline-specific words/terminology?

3. Does it include examples of metalanguage? (e.g. This paper focuses on...; The analysis is based on..., etc.)

4. Does it include any hedging devices (to soften the claims in the abstract)? (e.g. This can result in...; The results may indicate...)

5. Is the abstract grammatically and lexically correct?

6. Is it clear, easy to understand, and interesting?

Suggest changes that could improve the abstract. All the abstracts can be found below:

II. PREPARE A ONE-MINUTE ELEVATOR SPEECH.

POSSIBLE TOPICS:

  • BUSINESS PROPOSAL (eg. SALES PITCH)
  • GETTING AN IMPORTANT IDEA ACROSS (eg. THE IMPORTANCE OF EDUCATION)
  • CALLING TO ACTION (eg. WHY SORT OUT RUBBISH AT HOME)
