MPE_ACMA Seminar in macroeconomics

Distance learning due to school closure

Due to the forced change of the type of teaching from contact to distance, we need to implement the following changes regarding the course and completion requirements of the course:

Edit 26. 3. - added 2 subchapters (see below)

Edit 31. 3.

Edit 1. 4. - updated sub-chapter "Online meetings"

Seminars/leaflets

“Evaluation of the seminars” or its distance teaching alternative will be solving the exercises from the leaflet, on paper, by hand:

1)      You can choose to either

a)      work by yourself – in this case you will need to solve only some of the exercises from the leaflet. See sub-chapter "Homework Vaults & Deadlines" below which exercises you need to solve.

b)      form a study group and solve all obligatory problems (denoted with a "!") in the leaflet in a group of up to 4 members.

2)      You solve the exercises in the leaflet – on paper, by hand. Comment and explain your approach, describe the variables used, etc. Note that the answer is invalid unless substantiated by explanations/arguments/illustrations. Don't forget to answer all questions in the exercise. On the other hand, please don't add redundant text - just focus on answering the questions explicitly stated in the instructions. If you have a question regarding some exercise, or you don’t understand something, use a contrasting color (perhaps red) and write the question or comment directly on the paper. You will typically have one week to solve the exercises (Monday - Sunday) - see sub-chapter "Homework Vaults & Deadlines" below for deadlines.

3)      Scan or take a picture (perhaps with your mobile phone) of the papers with the solved exercises from the leaflet, put all the pictures/files together in one file (ZIP, DOCX, ...) and put them in the appropriate Homework Vault in the IS (see below). In the case of group work, only one member of the group submits the file and lists the names of the group members in the file. Please check the readability of the photos and the final file before uploading. If you ZIP your photos to get one file, check that that the files are in correct order, or rename them so that the contents is obvious. It is also a good idea to identify which exercise you are solving on each sheet (or add pagination).

4)      I will grade the leaflet, answer questions or comments (written in contrast color) if any and add a comment to the grading or solution, if needed. You will find my feedback/comments in the IS-notebook. I keep the commens brief and leave more room for explanation/discussion for the MS Teams meeting (see below). If in doubt about my comments, come to the meeting or we can arrange a chat/call in my office hours.

As for the details of grading: I am benevolent if you make numerical errors or typos. On the other hand, I will become more strict to cases of

  • missing explanations/arguments
  • completely missing answers to some questions in the exercise

In the grading we again distinguish between “Work in Seminars” and “Activity in Seminars” – I refer to the text in this int. syllabus - section "Course info & grading of seminars". Now, it will work in the following way:

"Work in Seminars" [max 3 points] – I will grade your solution of the leaflet

“Activity in Seminars” [max 1 point] - if you earn at least one point for “Work in Seminars” in the week, you get the additional one point for “Activity in Seminars” automatically to compensate for deteriorated learning conditions.

5)      After each leaflet is evaluated, I collect the most problematic exercises and will call a meeting in MS Teams. I will tell you what the main problems were and how to address them. We can also discuss the exercises! So - if you want to know some information about the past leaflet, you can join us in the meeting. You can only join to listen, or you can write questions or comments, or you can also ask (with a microphone). I will try to record the meeting in case you are unavailable at the time of the meeting. You can join the MS Teams group "Macro 2 & Seminars (in English)" here

The tests

The test originally planned for 6th and 13th week are postponed until the contact teaching is resumed.
