Optometry is a healthcare profession requiring a Bachelor’s degree. After completing the studies, an optometrist can independently determine the refractive status and errors of the client, suggests appropriate optical aids, and apply contact lenses. In diagnosing eye defects, optometrists and ophthalmologists use highly sophisticated optical and ophthalmological examination devices. In the course of their studies, students get acquainted with the use of these devices even in complicated cases at ophthalmology departments and clinics in Brno (St. Anne’s University Hospital, University Hospital Brno in Brno-Bohunice, and University Children’s Medical Center) as well as with the production of optical aids at facilities close to the St. Anne’s University Hospital, the facility of the Department of Optometry and Orthoptics in Komenského náměstí (Komenský Square), optical shops in Brno, and contact lens application centres. The programme introduces students to the fundamental principles of mathematics and physics focused on general optometry as the basis for the study of optometry. It further consists of medical and biology courses that provide students with the necessary knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and ophthalmology; optometry courses that form the core of the programme; and basic economics and legal regulations courses.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- Provide unsupervised care to adult clients and supervised care to children up to 15 years of age.
- Recommend appropriate optical aids.
- Examine the visual functions of the eye including refraction measurement and determine refractive errors.
- Provide counselling services in the area of refractive errors.
- Recommend examination by an ophthalmologist based on the nature of the eye condition.
- Apply contact lenses, educate the client about their use, and recommend appropriate care.
- Work with ophthalmological devices; an optometrist does not diagnose patients.
Graduates find employment as self-employed optometrists, in optical shops, ophthalmologist’s surgeries and ophthalmology wards of inpatient departments, contact lens application centres, centres for the application of magnifying aids, specialised institutions for visually impaired patients, and centres for the correction of acquired vision impairment.
The standard length of the study programme is six semesters. The final state examination includes a theoretical and a practical part as well as the Bachelor’s thesis defence. Students are required to follow the course catalogue.
As a part of their studies, students complete practical training in optical shops, optometry facilities, and inpatient and outpatient ophthalmology facilities.
To complete their studies, students must pass a final state examination, which includes the following areas: optics; production of optical aids; patient examination (examining refractive error and visual functions using ophthalmological devices and providing a basic diagnosis and diagnostic procedure); Bachelor’s thesis defence; and final state oral examination in the fundamental principles of ophthalmology, refractive errors and their correction, physical and geometrical optics, contact lenses, and optometry.
After completing their Bachelor’s studies and passing the admission exam, graduates can enrol in the Optometry (Specialization in Healthcare) Master’s degree programme.
