European Studies – Field of study catalogue MU
European Studies“Study Europe without barriers” |
The study field of European Studies focuses on political aspects of European integration process, and thus also on further issues connected with the working of the European Union and its role in the area of international relations. The study field provides its students with detailed knowledge of the political development of EU, and of the institutional structure and decision making mechanisms within it. It deals with political systems of Member States, relations of various countries vis-à-vis the EU, the process of enlargement, and an overview of joint policies of the EC/EU.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- understand the theories of European integration and correctly use the terminology of the discipline;
- compare the role and functions of European institutions;
- explain the position and role of Member States and non-governmental actors in the European Union development;
- interpret current political processes within the EU, enlargement negotiations, and compare approaches that influence the articulation of national interests of Member States.
Graduates of European Studies can pursue a career in a wide range of fields, particularly work in state administration and in diplomatic service, especially in international organizations and in European Union institutions in particular. Significant opportunities for graduates can be found in political representative offices; in analytical, scientific, or educational employment in think tanks and schools, and universities; at the headquarters of political parties; and in the field of journalism. This range is naturally broadened even further in combination with a second major.
The standard duration of studies is six semesters. For admittance to the Final State Examination, students studying in a double-major program must obtain a total of 180 ECTS credits. Out of the 180 ECTS, 90 ECTS must be acquired in the field of European Studies. Required courses constitute the basis of the program and make up 60 credits. Out of the semi-elective courses, which make up 30 credits in total, students choose according to their interests and intended professional specialization.
Students studying solely European Studies are required to earn 180 ECTS, from which 60 ECTS must come from required courses.
The program culminates in the Final State Examination. Students may take the FSE after reaching 180 ECTS and completion of the university requirements. All students are required to complete at least one course taught in English.
During the course of their studies, students should follow the "Study Catalog" for their year of matriculation. This can be accessed through the faculty website.
Practical training is part of the study plan and is optional. The Department of International Relations and European Studies offers students various multiple-month internships at institutions such as CZELO (the Czech Liaison Office for Research and Development) or representative offices of Czech regions in Brussels, as well as in institutions in the domestic arena, such as the South Moravian Regional Government.
The Final State Exam in European Studies is a written exam that consists of two subjects - European integration and European politics. General themes are available to the students before the exam. The test consists of open questions. Part of the final exam is the defense of the thesis, which should encompass approximately 30-40 pages of text, i.e. a minimum of 54,000 characters.
After completion of the Bachelor's studies, it will be possible to apply for admission to a subsequent Master's degree program in European Studies, or to another Master's degree program of the graduate's choice.
