In this study programme, students master the scientific methods used in epidemiology; obtain knowledge and skills to analyse data, especially data concerning the relationship between living conditions and health; learn how to use laboratory and special methods (e.g. genetics, toxicology, analytical chemistry, psychological tests, physical fitness tests, etc.); learn how to interpret results concisely and accurately; gain the ability to suggest interventions in primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention and in health promotion; obtain the knowledge and skills to provide interventions and evaluate their effectiveness; obtain knowledge and skills needed for basic and applied research in prevention (environment, living conditions, health status).

Hygiene, Preventive Medicine, and Epidemiology is unique in its interdisciplinary approach that allows students and graduates to focus on research in emerging research areas and multidisciplinary issues that transcend into economy, education, sociology, psychology, pharmacology, microbiology, toxicology, etc.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • Use scientific methods in the study of epidemiology.
  • Work in basic and applied prevention research (environment, living conditions, health status).
  • Design and manage the educational components of interventions.
  • Analyse data, especially in the area of the relationship between living conditions and health, and use laboratory and special methods as needed.
  • Design, manage, and analyse the effectiveness of primary and secondary prevention programmes.

Graduates can work as physicians in various fields of medicine who can independently plan and implement primary and secondary prevention programmes. Graduates who obtained their Master’s degree in non-physician programmes at faculties of medicine and/or healthcare faculties can work in primary and secondary prevention and health promotion, including as independent designers and managers of the education components of interventions.

Graduates can also work as dieticians within health promotion and disease prevention through nutrition, and can independently plan and manage primary and secondary prevention programmes, or as researchers in both basic and applied research in the field of health protection and promotion and the analysis of risk factors related to living conditions.

The study plan includes courses related directly to preventive medicine, hygiene, and epidemiology, as well as courses that are useful for the students' further development and their ability to communicate and present their research findings, conduct clinical and experimental studies, statistically evaluate data, etc. This curriculum is completed by the study of English as the lingua franca of our time.
(?)
To pass the doctoral state examination in Hygiene, Preventive Medicine, and Epidemiology, students need to understand the relationship between humans and their environment and the mutual interactions of the two; the importance of adaptation and its promotion to support the health of individuals and populations; be aware of the priorities in the area of primary prevention; be able to decide for specific types of prevention of selected non-communicable diseases that occur on a mass scale, such as cardiovascular, oncological, metabolic, immune, respiratory, and other conditions.
