Economic Policy and International Relations – Field of study catalogue MU
Economic Policy and International Relations |
This study programme represents a unique combination of interdisciplinary Master’s degree level economics with key subjects in the field of Master’s degree level international relations. Within the context of economic policy, the study focuses on applied economic policy based on standard economic theory (a weakened quantitative analytical dimension in favour of the historical and political context). In the context of international relations issues, the study focuses on international political economy, accompanied by the theory and history of international relations (a weakened security and strategic dimension in favour of the economic dimension of international relations). Attention is paid to economic history and the history of international relations; economic theory and international relations theory; economic geography and geopolitics; and economic politics and international political economy. This branch of study is ideal for graduates of the Bachelor’s degree study programme combination Economic Policy and International Relations, but it is available to all Bachelor’s degree study programme graduates in the fields of economic and political sciences. Space in the study is dedicated to the adaptation of students from economic fields to political science and vice versa.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- be aware of the interdependence of economic and international political implications
- gain awareness of the wider international impacts of economic and social measures
- recognize the political means of influencing the distribution of resources, both nationally and internationally, and to propose measures to modify them
- recognize the limits of political enforceability of proposed economic measures and suggest ways to overcome them
Graduates of this field will have Master’s degree level knowledge of the economy and economic policy as well as Master’s degree level knowledge of international relations, focused on the economic dimension. This will enable graduates to find jobs in top public administration – economic policy development, representation of the Czech Republic in the EU and in international economic institutions, in EU structures, in international trade policy, common trade policy development, in international economic institutions, and in the corporate and private sphere including the field of organized interests. Graduates can work as analysts dealing with trade and economic policy, in research and development, or in the academic sphere.
The standard duration of studies is four semesters. For admittance to the final state examination, students must earn a total of 120 ECTS credits for type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses. Type A/required courses constitute the basis of the discipline and their share is the largest part of credits (including credits for courses focused on writing a Master’s thesis). Students choose type B/selective courses according to their interests and intended professional specialization. The remaining credits can be earned from type C/elective courses offered in the curriculum of the given study programme or from other courses offered by any other study programme. The total minimum number of credits is defined by the study and examination regulations of Masaryk University, the guidance note about the general study requirements, and the current study catalogue. Students can access the study catalogues through the faculty website.
