After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• gain an orientation in the main fields of Chinese culture and understand their mutual correlation
• speak and read Chinese at the HSK 5 level
• discuss diverse topics in Chinese history, literature, philosophy, religion, art, politics, and language
• recognize Chinese socio-cultural characteristics and use them practically
• use methodological skills in research applied to the chosen field of Chinese studies

Graduates may work in a variety of professional fields, from translating and interpreting to consulting, business, tourism, teaching, and alternative medicine. Specialized fields usually require further training.

The standard duration of studies is six semesters. For admittance to the final state examination, students must obtain a minimum of 180 credits for type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses.

During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the Chinese Seminar web pages.

The Bachelor’s study programme is a well-rounded language programme consisting of 12 teaching hours per week related to language in the first year of study and 8 teaching hours in the second and third year. A course introducing classical Chinese is also provided, as well as optional reading in classical Chinese.

In order to graduate, the student has to pass the final state examination, consisting of the defence of the Bachelor’s thesis and an oral exam in the following disciplines: history of China, history of Chinese literature, history of Chinese thought, and Chinese language (theoretical and practical).

After completion of the Bachelor’s study programme, it is possible to continue in the Master’s degree programme (after satisfying the admission requirements).
