The aim of this four-year doctoral degree study programme is to prepare fully qualified university experts. The study programme offers highly specialized and individualized studies that include scholarly work in the fields of music history, sociology, aesthetics, music theory, and organology. The study programme specializes in both early and modern Czech and European music culture with special attention to some themes, including the music activities of religious brethren in Moravia in early modern times, court music, Leoš Janáček, Alois Hába, the study of audience taste, and the relationship between music theory and aesthetics in the 19th and 20th centuries. Graduates are fully qualified for work requiring expert knowledge and critical thinking. They master the subject discourse and methodological aspects of individual disciplines. They are equipped with thorough knowledge of the subject of their specialization. They carry out independent creative expert and scholarly work. Graduates are employed at universities and in scholarly and cultural institutions.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • manage independent creative expert and scholarly work
  • master the subject discourse and methodological problems of individual disciplines in full
  • demonstrate thorough knowledge of the subject of specialization
  • speak at least two major languages and present work results in them
  • be informed about present-day musicological and socio-cultural trends

Graduates are fully qualified for work in a field that requires expert knowledge and critical thinking. Graduates are employed in universities, high schools, and in scholarly and cultural institutions.

The standard duration of studies is four years. Studies are conducted in both full-time and combined form in Czech, English or German. Supervisors and consultants are experts from the Czech Republic and abroad.

The study programme offers a highly specialized and individualized study aimed at scholarly work. The study plan includes specialist lectures (historical and systematic), scholarly seminars, and individual consultations. Some lectures and seminars are conducted in English and German. Participation in conferences both within the Czech Republic and abroad and research practice are obligatory parts of the programme.
