The final state examination is designed as an academic discussion of questions from the field of literary studies. No later than a month before the exam, the candidate delivers a set of five theses to the supervisor. After the supervisor’s approval, at least a week before the exam, the chair of the board of examiners sends the theses to all the examiners. The examination takes place independently of the dissertation defence, always in the examination period, and students must have passed the examination by the end of the six semester of the study programme.

The dissertation defence consists of the supervisor’s presentation of the student, the student’s presentation of the key points of the thesis, the presentation of reviews, the response to reviews, and a discussion. Afterward, the committee votes and assigns a grade.
