The standard duration of studies is eight semesters. For admittance to the final state examination, students must earn a total of 240 ECTS credits for the required courses. During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the faculty website.
(?)
The state examination takes the form of an expert discussion between the student and the committee. The committee makes a list of the topics to be covered during the discussion and makes the list available to the student no later than a month before the examination. The examination is independent of the thesis defence; it takes place always during the regular exam period and the student must pass this exam by the end of the sixth semester.

The thesis defence has the following parts: the supervisor introduces the student; the student presents the main conclusions of the thesis; the reports on the thesis by the committee members are read; the student replies to the comments and objections presented in the reports; the committee members may discuss their further comments with the student; and finally, after a discussion, the committee settles on a grade for the student.
