Graduates have deepened and extended knowledge of historical-comparative linguistics methodology, from the points of view of a traditional postneogrammarian and of structural linguistics.

Graduates encountered detailed questions and the history of historical-comparative linguistics and extended their knowledge in specialized areas according to their research interests.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • actively use historical-comparative methods
  • apply knowledge in linguistic analysis
  • analyse problems of the development of Indo-European and other languages

The educational profile achieved qualifies graduates for academic work in linguistics, or graduates can use their knowledge in practical work with language (teaching, interpreting, translating, etc.).

The education achieved allows graduates an intimate knowledge of the development of a language structure and the principles of language structures, useful for work in fields such as translation, editorial work, and journalism, and that apply in any professions that require the ability to think independently and critically and good communication skills in their native or foreign languages.

The standard length of the study is four semesters. It is necessary to obtain a total of at least 120 credits both for type A/required as well as type B/selective and type C/selective courses. The student curriculum is according to the study catalogue corresponding to their matriculation year.

The final examination consists of three separate oral questions, given according to the list published on the website of the Institute of Linguistics, one year in advance (http://www.phil.muni.cz/jazyk/studium.html#okru). The final mark is an average of the partial marks for the given questions.
