The Bachelor's degree in French Language for Commercial Practice is run as a double-subject course (part of the Philology study programme at the Faculty of Education), based on the system of combinations of fields at different faculties at Masaryk University. Students combine it with Economics (part of the Economics and Administration study programme) based at the Faculty of Economics and Administration. The main objective of this course is to prepare the graduates' linguistic, professional, communication and cultural skills for future employment in the economic and administrative environment.

The combined structure of this course takes advantage of the complementary educational system offered by the whole university and, as such, results in a number of positives such as, for example:

- a modular structure (study programmes and courses are comprised of subject specific modules - linguistic, culturally historical and geographical, practical both in terms of communication and specialisation)

- system structure (optimal organic combination of a subject within a module as well as complete modules)

- variability (wide selection of subjects, modules, possibility of choosing and changing specializations etc.)

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • use French at the C2 level in receptive activities (listening and reading) and C1 level in production activities (spoken and written) according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (communication competency)
  • categorise theoretical knowledge and apply practical skills from the spheres of phonetics, morphology, syntax and vocabulary (linguistic competency)
  • interpret some of the most important historical events and contexts within which French literary styles have developed (literary sciences competency)
  • compare their own culture and historical context with the social and cultural development of Francophone countries and establish contacts with representatives of such cultures (inter-cultural competency)
  • develop and widen the above mentioned competencies with specialised disciplines offered at the MSc level studies
  • reflect developments in this field and react to contemporary changes of society and economics
  • integrate their own development into the fields of civil administration, private business sector or international economic and administrative co-operation

The graduates are not authorised to practise a legally regulated professional position. However, they can work as expert language officers with specialized foreign language communication skills, mainly in the spheres of civil administration or the private business sector. The combination of these two specializations equips students with solid foundations in both theoretical and applied economics as well as in French used in specialized economic and administrative spheres. They are able to use and further develop their expertise in the labour market. Their language skills combined with economic and administrative knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills also improve their chances of gaining employment in international institutions. With this background, the graduates can contribute to the cultivation and development of the international economy and administrative co-operation.

The standard duration of the course is six semesters. Students must acquire 180 credits. The number of credits is equally divided between both parts of the course. At the Faculty of Economics and Administration, students have to get 50 credits in the required subjects, 30 credits in selective subjects and 10 credits in the elective subjects, which includes physical education. At the Faculty of Education, students gain 70 credits in required subjects, 10 credits in selective subjects and 10 credits in elective subjects.

The module structure ensures that the course's content is well balanced. Students choose a given number of subjects from each module depending on the curriculum requirements and their own interests:

- The linguistic module covers theoretical subjects which enable the students to gain an orientation in the various structures of the French language

- The culturally historic and geographic module covers subjects dealing with factual and cultural aspects of life in France and other francophone countries

- The practical communication module concentrates on the ability to communicate in everyday situations

- The specialist module contains subjects which deal with public administration issues from the linguistic point of view (mainly lexicology) as well as gaining an orientation in current international political and economic situations.

Special emphasis is placed on an understanding of the development of specific topics and their systematic comparison with their own culture and language and with the complementary economics study programme.

The final state examination for the undergraduate degree in French Language for Commercial Practice consists of both a written and oral part. The written part covers a translation of a specialist text from French into Czech and a grammar test examining students' understanding of a professional text. The oral part tests students' knowledge with three randomly picked questions. These cover 1) linguistics (phonetics, morphology and syntax); 2) cultural and historical aspects (French and francophone literature and history); 3) geography. The actual knowledge, its presentation and the ability to apply it in practice are observed and marked. The relevant themes and recommended literature are given in advance and, together with further information, can be found at http://katedry.ped.muni.cz/francouzstina/studium/ukonceni

Passing the Bachelor's degree equips the graduates with the competencies necessary for an application to the French-Czech Master's degree in Public Administration MFTAP (Master Franco Tchèque d’Administration Publique) at the Faculty of Economics and Administration, MU. This is a bilingual programme run in co-operation with Rennes University in France and is completed as a joint degree. The graduates can also apply for any other MSc degree courses specialising in economy or administration. Alternatively, students can continue onto a Master's degree course in applied linguistics which is offered at universities abroad (particularly in France).
