Physiotherapy

Preventable and treatable.

Studying physiotherapy at the Faculty of Sports Studies allows students to acquire deep theoretical knowledge and practical skills in the context of preventative, diagnostic and therapeutic care in rehabilitation. Physiotherapy graduates are able in collaboration with physicians to implement diagnostic, therapeutic and preventative procedures and methods in the rehabilitation process and in patient care. With a sophisticated focus of study and systematic teaching of practical skills, graduates of this field can work in the implementation of programmes of the WHO and the United Nations and preventative health regeneration programmes for vulnerable population groups. Furthermore, they are able to prescribe and monitor physical intervention programmes in primary and secondary prevention of major chronic non-infectious diseases with dominant global prevalence. Students may also occupy an important place in the care of disabled citizens and with their professional knowledge and skills may contribute to their social integration.

Graduates of physiotherapy at FSpS MU will also be ready to work as sports physiotherapists in sports teams, clubs and organizations. Thanks to their special education in sport and in the application of therapeutic plans to compensate for unilateral sporting overload, they are able to enhance the quality of the sports training process supporting the health of athletes. Graduates are thus able to provide quality care to the general sporting population as well as to top athletes.

Due to the strong focus on sports physiotherapy and collaboration in research projects related to the physically active population, students of Physiotherapy at FSpS MU stand out from physiotherapy students at most other universities in the country.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • describe and explain in accordance with kinanthropology and medico-biological and social sciences, basic theoretical and methodological knowledge in the field of therapeutic and preventative rehabilitation
  • practically apply diagnostic and therapeutic approaches and methods
  • investigate the musculoskeletal system of the individual to determine the differential diagnosis of a key issue, and based on the knowledge to design and apply a therapeutic plan
  • generate and uphold for individual patients the diagnostic and therapeutic process of comprehensive rehabilitation and bear full responsibility for it
  • suggest a preventative or therapeutic exercise programme for clients from the ranks of racing and amateur athletes of all ages, both healthy and disabled
  • participate in the integration of disabled citizens and to improve their quality of life
  • describe the rules and principles of ethical behaviour and conduct in the provision of care for their clients and patients
  • apply basic knowledge of scientific methodology and design and develop a model case study within a research project

The graduates of physiotherapy are prepared to carry out work in departments providing comprehensive physiotherapy care, in medical rehabilitation centres and institutes, social care institutes, in spa facilities, and in all other workplaces dealing with medical rehabilitation. They can also apply for health care for athletes of all ages and performance levels.

The standard duration of the studies is six semesters. To be able to take the final state examination, students must obtain a total of 180 credits in required and selective subjects, including credits for courses aimed at preparing their thesis. All students must pass a test in English. During their studies, students follow the template for studies in the MU Information System.

Ongoing and continuous work experience is a very important part of the study of physiotherapy. It starts from the second semester. Each student must complete 468 hours of ongoing work experience and 560 hours of continuous work experience over the entire Bachelor's degree. Teaching practical exercises, which happens at FSpS, is not included in this number of hours.

Ongoing work experience takes place with small groups of students (maximum five students), continuous work experience is individual. Students are required to perform the professional experience in its entirety. During the experience, students work on individual cases and keep journals from their experience, which are used to check their work and for the credit. For individual patients, every student actively participates in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. Students work under the supervision of physiotherapists and internal staff of the faculty. The work experience takes place in workplaces that have concluded an agreement with FSpS MU.

Organisation of the work experience:

1st semester.

Practical lessons are taught through exercises in which students practise practical skills on each other. These exercises complement the theoretical subjects throughout the study.

2nd semester.

Subject Physiotherapy I - ongoing work experience for 4 hours per week on inpatients and rehabilitation departments. Professional Work Experience I - continuous summer work, 4 weeks, 40 hours per week on inpatients.

3rd semester.

Physiotherapy II - ongoing work experience for six hours a week in the departments of orthopedics and traumatology. Professional Work Experience II - continuous winter experience for three weeks, 40 hours per week in spa facilities.

4th semester.

Physiotherapy III - ongoing work experience for six hours a week at a cardiology and internal medicine department. Professional Work Experience III - continuous summer work, 4 weeks, 40 hours per week, is divided into two parts, two weeks in rehabilitation centres and nursing homes (Departments of Social Welfare), two weeks in sports clubs.

5th semester.

Physiotherapy IV - ongoing work, 10 hours per week in the departments of neurology and neurosurgery and spinal units. Professional Work Experience IV - continuous winter work for three weeks, 40 hours per week in rehabilitation clinics.

6th semester.

Physiotherapy - continuous work experience, 10 hours per week in outpatient rehabilitation departments.

In order to increase their practical skills, students work at the end of the course of Applied Physical Therapy IV and Fundamentals of diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal III and IV at contractual health centres. These internships follow the practical state examination, which aims to demonstrate the ability to apply practical skills on specific patients.

(?)

The final state examination takes the form of an oral examination intended to demonstrate the general overview of the basic concepts and practices of individual disciplines and the broader connection between them. The final examination should also test whether the student is able to discuss at expert level.

The final state examination has three parts. The first is practical, in which students demonstrate practical knowledge and skills from the field on a particular patient (examination, testing, diagnosis and therapeutic proposal process). At the oral examination, the student answers three questions on topics and subjects from General Sports Kinesiotherapy, Physical Therapy and Physiotherapy in clinical specialties. The third part of the final examination is the defence of the thesis. The student demonstrates their knowledge through their Bachelor's thesis on issues of a particular aspect of their studies and the ability to process the results of academic work conducted mostly in the form of a controlled case study. Understanding of the topic and the level of presentation of the work is evaluated by the thesis defence.

A graduate of the bachelor's study program in physiotherapy can (after fulfilling the conditions for admission) continue in a two-year full-time follow-up master's program in Physiotherapy (Faculty of Medicine MU), full-time program Strength and Conditioning Training and Applied Kinesiology (Faculty of Sports Studies MU).
