The objective of the doctoral programme is to prepare students for work in academia in the field of educational science so that they are able to plan and carry out a research project using suitable research methods and techniques. The students should have a basic understanding of current approaches and methods in educational research and sound knowledge of educational science.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- Plan and carry out an educational research project and evaluate its findings
- Plan and carry out an educational research project and evaluate its findings
- Cooperate with experts from other institutions locally or internationally
- Use their knowledge and experience to deal with issues pertaining to education
- In universities, particularly in departments of Pedagogy in Faculties of Education, Arts, etc. in the Czech Republic,
- in various educational institutions and research institutions,
- consulting and managing companies.
Semesters 1 to 4: Students enrol in required courses including educational research methodology, philosophy of education, and educational science.
Semester 5: Students enrol in two selective courses (a language course and a specialized course).
Semester 6: Students enrol in one selective course. Students register for the state examination and submit the dissertation thesis outline.
Semester 7: Students take the state doctoral examination and defend their dissertation thesis outline.
Semester 8: Students register for the dissertation thesis defence and defend their thesis.
To advance their academic skills, the students should partake in the following activities during the standard study period (i.e. 4 years):
- Publications (4 papers where the student is the first author, two of these in a journal databased in WOS ISI, SCOPUS, ERIH or in the list of non-reviewed non-impacted periodicals issued in the Czech Republic).
- Presentations at national conferences (2x) and presentations at international conferences, or a study stay at an institution abroad (minimal length one week; 2x).
- Providing proof of knowledge of two foreign languages for academic purposes.
- For full-time students, teaching university courses is required (approx. 4 lessons a week) and further activities as required by the institute or the department (approx. 4 to 8 hours a week).
All semesters: students enrol in the following courses: Professional Orientation in the Field of Study and Dissertation Preparation.
Full-time students undergo teaching practice at a primary/lower secondary (or upper secondary) school and at the Department of Education, where they participate in preparing and delivering seminars for Bachelor's and Master's students in the common core courses under the supervision of experienced lecturers.
1. Fulfilling the criteria specified by the study programme.
2. Successfully defending the dissertation thesis outline and passing the state doctoral examination in education.
3. Successfully defending the dissertation thesis.
During the doctoral state examination, the student’s skills and knowledge in the following areas are assessed:
- Educational research methodology;
- General issues in educational science (philosophy of education, modern theories of education) and educational psychology;
- Specialized issues as discussed in selective courses and connected to the topic of the dissertation thesis.
