The core of the study programme is ancient history, with an emphasis on the history of classical antiquity and ancient heritage in administration, law, literacy, and art of the subsequent epochs of European history. The subject of studies is the political organization of ancient states, as well as their economies, religion, and culture; great attention is paid to the cultural contribution of the lands of the Ancient Near East. The student learns to recognize different developmental stages of the oldest history of humankind, their similarities and specific features, the paths taken by culture and knowledge.

The emphasis is on reading source materials, either in the original or in translations into modern languages. The basis of the studies is formed by courses following the timeline from the birth of the first states in the Near East up to the formation of the so-called barbaric states in the transitional period between Antiquity and the Middle Ages, and by the compulsory linguistic training in the area of ancient languages. The studies are complemented by courses necessary for broader orientation in various issues of ancient history and culture.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

competently read sources connected to a selected period of ancient history
understand the roots of a specific development of some civilizations, ethnicities, and religious systems
discern the genesis of contemporary political systems
understand the share of individual regions of the world and its inhabitants on the creation of a general human culture and moral values
explain the processes of ancient history from its beginnings in Mesopotamia and Egypt until the fall of the ancient world

Graduates of the Ancient History study programme can find work in the cultural sphere (museums, galleries, libraries, archives, and the education of young people in various interest groups). They will also be able to work in tourism and in public and state service.

The standard duration of Bachelor's degree studies is six semesters.

The study is offered as double-subject programme only.

For admittance to the Bachelor's state examination, students must obtain 105 ECTS credits to finish their studies with Ancient History as their major subject, or 95 credits if Ancient History is their minor subject, for required, selective, and elective courses. Required courses make up 83 credits (including credits for courses focused on writing a Bachelor’s thesis) if finishing with Ancient History as major subject, or 73 credits if Ancient History is the minor subject. The selective courses, which students choose according to their interests and intended professional specialization, make up 12 credits in total. The remaining 10 credits are for the courses compulsory for all students of the Faculty of Arts (Philosophy, Physical Education, and a foreign language).

During the course of their studies students should follow the "Study catalogue" for their year of matriculatio, which is accessible through the faculty website.

The Bachelor's state examination is oral only. Topics that are required at the exam are publicly available on the website of the Department of Classical Studies.

At the Bachelor's state exam, knowledge of a rather encyclopaedic character is required. The student draws five questions from a published list comprising questions on the introduction to ancient history, the history of the Ancient Near East and Egypt, and the history of ancient Greece and Rome.

Defence of the Bachelor's thesis or presentation of a Bachelor's minor thesis takes place concurrently with the oral examination. The student is admitted to defence if at least one of the required reviews is commendatory.

After completion of the Bachelor's studies of Ancient History the graduate can continue in the ensuing Master's degree programme in Ancient History or any other Master's degree programme, preferably in:
