Modelling and Calculations

It is easy to find the correct mathematical model. To find the problem to which it can be applied is far more difficult.

In view of the quick changes in the world around us, there is a strong need for people who understand the mathematical background of the wide areas of exact and social sciences, and who are also able to use information technology effectively. The ability to communicate across the traditional borders of branches is also essential. The modular structure including mathematics, informatics, and specific natural or social sciences represents our response to this challenge. The study programme of Modelling and Calculations links mathematics, informatics, and other branches. It is a quickly developing multidisciplinary area connected to natural sciences, economics, and technical sciences.

The goal of this study programme is to provide the students with real education focusing on applied mathematics, and prepare them for the follow-up studies in the Master's degree programmes.

(?)

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • prove deeper mathematical thinking oriented also towards different branches of exact and social sciences
  • gain an orientation in the basic methods of applied mathematics and statistics
  • use modern computational tools
(?)
In cooperation with experts in various branches (according to the particular specialization) they can participate in solving specific scientific as well as real life problems. The graduates can find employment in the areas of data processing and analysis. They are expected to work in interdisciplinary institutions.

The study programme is designed to be modular. This means that students choose the appropriate module which determines the aim of their studies. The module of Mathematical Modelling and Information Technology is required. The students select another module no later than upon enrolling in the third semester. The content of the Bachelor's thesis should correspond to the selected optional module.

The standard duration of studies is 3 years.

To complete education in the Bachelor's degree programme of Mathematics in the study programme of Modelling and Calculations each student has to enrol in and successfully complete all required courses respecting their established continuity. In addition to the required courses in each module students have to attend courses of language training and sports, write a Bachelor's thesis in the chosen module, and successfully complete all the components of the final state examination.

During their studies students have to earn at least 180 credits for compulsory, selective, and elective courses, and at least 10 credits out of 180 have to be earned in selective courses in the compulsory module of Mathematical Modelling and Information Technology. It is necessary to earn at least 90 credits before choosing the topic of the Bachelor's thesis.

In the course of their studies students follow the control templates in the Information System of Masaryk University for their matriculation year. Basic information about the study programme is published on

the website of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (http://www.math.muni.cz) in the section "For Students".

To obtain university education in the Bachelor's degree programme of Mathematics in the study programme of Modelling and Calculations each student has to successfully complete all the components of the final state examination. The final state examination consists of the Bachelor's thesis defence and oral examination.

In the Bachelor's thesis students demonstrate their understanding of the topic area of the thesis, and the ability to perform expert work under supervision. The level of understanding of the topic and the quality of presentation are evaluated during the defence of the thesis.

The purpose of the oral examination is to verify that the graduate is able to discuss expert problems at a certain professional level. The aim of the oral examination is not to repeat the examinations in individual subjects or test a detailed knowledge of theory and proofs. The purpose is to demonstrate a general overview of the basic concepts and results from various disciplines, the broader connections between them, or their possible uses.

During the oral examination, students answer three questions from the areas of foundations of mathematics, fundamentals of information technology, and fundamentals of computational models and methods. More detailed information is published on the web pages of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics (http://www.math.muni.cz) in the section "For Students".

(?)
The graduates will be well prepared for the follow-up studies in a wide spectrum of courses training highly qualified experts in areas requiring the solid mathematical basis (especially chemistry, economics, biology, applied mathematics, and applied informatics).

The graduates can also progress to any follow-up Master's degree programmes that are not teacher training programmes within the study programme of Mathematics; it is necessary to pass the entrance examination for the relevant study programme. Statistics and Data Analysis or Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Methods are suitable programmes for further studies.
