After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• be knowledgeable about the basic development of collecting activities and museums, knowing the key rules of creation, maintenance, protection, conservation, and presentation of museum collections etc., and apply the acquired theoretical knowledge
• independently plan and manage museum activity in the field of public relations
• be knowledgeable about other fields of protection of cultural heritage

Graduates of the Bachelor’s degree study programme in Museology are qualified for jobs in institutions responsible for the preservation of cultural heritage, including museums, historic preservations offices, etc. They are also qualified for positions in local and regional government offices concerned with cultural heritage preservation, in foundations, private institutions, etc., as well as in private museums, galleries, auction houses, and similar institutions.

The standard duration of the study programme is six semesters. For admittance to the final state examination, students must earn a total of 180 ECTS credits for type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses. Type A/required courses (95 credits for single-subject full-time study, 90 credits for double-subject full-time degree study, 80 credits for double-subject full-time non-degree study, and 115 credits for combined study, including credits for courses focused on writing a Bachelor’s thesis and basic courses for faculty students) constitute the basis of the discipline. Students choose type B/selective courses (36 credits for combined study) and type C/elective courses (85 credits for single-subject full-time study, 5 credits for double-subject full-time degree study, 5 credits for double-subject full-time non-degree study, and 29 credits for combined study) according to their interests and intended professional specialization. The study includes lectures by foreign lecturers.

During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the Faculty of Arts website.

The study programme in Museology includes specialized practical internships in museums and other cultural institutions accompanied by professional supervision. A compulsory part of the Bachelor’s full-time study programme is a 100-hour museological internship focused on acquiring professional experience through contact with all specialized professions participating in the operation of a museum institution. This type of practical internship is compulsory, but as an option the students can enrol repeatedly and acquire further professional experience and contacts. The other, optional, type of practical professional training is the 100-hour internship in museum pedagogy, which is open to students in both the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree study programmes and is focused on gaining a deeper insight into the work of a museum pedagogue. During the internship, students encounter all types of museum pedagogical activities and gradually acquire the competences which are necessary for this profession. This internship can also be repeated.

The final state oral examination examines the students’ knowledge in these subject areas: 1) theoretical museology; 2) historical museology; and 3) applied museology. The questions correspond to the assigned subject areas and recommended literature.

One part of the final state examination is also the defence of the Bachelor’s thesis, which must be at least 70,000 characters of basic text. More information about graduation requirements can be found on the department’s website: http://www.phil.muni.cz/waom

After completion of the Bachelor’s degree study programme, it is possible to continue further studies in any Master’s degree study programme (after satisfying the admission requirements). At the Faculty of Arts, students can apply for admission to a follow-up Master’s degree study programme in Museology.
