The follow-up Master's study programme of Applied and Environmental Geology is intended for students planning to work in a common geological company environment. The programme is aimed at completing Master's degree in any form of the studies: full-time, on-line and part-time (combined). It also covers selected applied areas of specialization, a practical course in mining documentation and courses linked to preparing Master's thesis.

The goal of the studies in the follow-up Master's degree programme is to consolidate and deepen, irrespective of the chosen study programme, education gained in the previous Bachelor's degree programme and get professional qualifications in geology. The graduates are qualified to work independently and creatively in geological branches as theoreticians, practical geologists or educators.

The study program of Geology prepares highly educated specialists in geological branches, such as environmental geology, geophysics, geochemistry, historical geology, hydrogeology, mineralogy, magmatic and metamorphic petrology, palaeontology, quarternary geology and karsology, regional geology, sedimentary geology, soil mechanics and tectonics.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • independently solve specific geological problems (setting solution procedures, processing scientific literature and data sources, choice of methodology, analysis of results, drawing conclusions)
  • write a research paper based on their own research and present the results of the research at an adequate level both orally and in a written form
  • demonstrate deep knowledge of practical disciplines according to their specializations (economic geology, hydrogeology, engineering geology, environmental geology)

The graduates are expected to find employment especially in specialized geological companies, in institutes applying geological knowledge to practical needs (such as environmental departments etc.).

The standard duration of the study programme is four semesters. To get admitted to the final state exam, students must obtain a total of 120 credits for compulsory, selective and elective courses. Compulsory courses cover a third of the credits and comprise the preparation of the Master's thesis and preparation for its defence. Selective courses are chosen according to the requirements of the final state exam and cover approximately a third of the credits.

The remaining third of the credits can be obtained by completing elective courses. During the course of their studies students should follow the Study catalogue for their year of matriculation. They can access the Study catalogue through the faculty website.

The final state exam consists of a knowledge examination and defence of Master's thesis. The knowledge exam consists of four parts: one of them is general and the other three parts are given by a student's specialization.

Graduates can pursue their studies in doctoral degree programmes.
