After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• Recommend the appropriate type of optical aid.
• Examine visual functions of the eye including refraction measurement, determine refraction errors and appropriate correction, and decide whether glasses, contact lenses, or a special optical aid should be used for the correction.
• Provide counselling on refractive errors.
• Recommend examination by an ophthalmologist based on the nature of the eye condition.
• Apply contact lenses, recommend appropriate care for the lenses, and schedule follow-up appointments.
• Use his/her teaching skills in teaching ocular optics and optometry and be a lifelong learner himself/herself.
• Work with ophthalmological devices; an optometrist does not assess the results of measurements or diagnose patients.
• Follow developments in the field of optometry.

Optometrists are specialists in the area of refractive error correction using glasses or contact lenses. They can find the best options for correcting refractive errors to achieve the required goal, based on the diagnosis and recommendation of a physician. Optometrists can work as autonomous experts in ocular optics and optometry in outpatient optometry clinics, optical shops, ophthalmology departments, medical rehabilitation centres, social care institutions, spas, and other facilities, primarily in the area of corrective optical aids, and also as teachers and lecturers at secondary schools and universities.

The standard length of the study programme is four semesters. To complete their studies, students have to pass a final state examination (both theoretical and practical) and defend their Master’s thesis. Students are required to follow the course catalogue.

As a part of their studies, students complete practical training in optical shops, optometry facilities, and inpatient and outpatient ophthalmology centres.

After completing their studies and passing admission exams, graduates of the Master’s degree programme can enrol in the Medical Biophysics doctoral degree program.
