After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• understand problems of public economics and the public sector and work in managerial positions in public sector institutions
• find and use relevant economic, legal, and other important information to analyse and evaluate practical problems
• compare possible solutions to recognized public sector problems and evaluate the suitability of selected solutions
• understand qualitative and quantitative methods for analysing the public sector and interpreting the results of statistical surveys
• communicate in English at a good level and work with foreign scientific sources and identify and apply suitable tools in practice
• work in non-governmental organizations in managerial positions
• perceive the basic economic consequences of EU membership especially in the fields of public finance, public administration, and public policy

Graduates in this field are prepared especially for working in economic and administrative professions in public and private non-profit sectors. The economist’s work in these sectors is particularly demanding in terms of the ability to perceive, understand, and respect political and social aspects of economic processes. The training therefore includes subjects such as public economy, public administration, social policy, regional and municipal economy, and public policy. The students learn to manage public resources effectively, both in terms of public earnings (tax system, tax and duty administration) and in terms of investing public money into various spheres. Graduates will be able to work in institutions such as tax offices, customs offices, employment offices, social security offices, court administration, prosecution offices, and penal systems, as well as schools, cultural institutions, hospitals, social services institutes, mass media, technical infrastructure and housing institutions, etc.

The standard duration of studies is six semesters. For admittance to the final state examination, students must earn a total of 180 ECTS credits for type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses. Type A/required courses constitute the basis of the discipline and their share is the largest part of credits (including credits for courses focused on writing a Bachelor’s thesis). Students choose type B/selective courses according to their interests and intended professional specialization. The remaining credits can be earned from type C/elective courses offered in the curriculum of the given study programme or from other courses offered by any other study programme. The total minimum number of credits is defined by the study and examination regulations of Masaryk University, the guidance note about the general study requirements, and the current study catalogue. Students can access the study catalogues through the faculty website.

The final state examination in the Public Economics and Administration study programme is oral and has three parts:

- Thesis defence (a projector is available)

- Examination in Economics (student draws one question): questions and methodological guidelines for the exam can be found on the department website

- Examination in Public Economics

After completing the Bachelor’s degree study programme, it is possible to continue further studies in the Master’s degree study programme in Economic Policy and Administration or Regional Development and Administration.
