The study field of International Relations and European Politics (taught in English) makes students familiar with basic issues of international relations and European studies with strong emphasis on international relations theory and theories of European integration. Key areas of the study program include the history of international relations and Europe, the foreign policy of selected actors, and security aspects of international relations including energy security. Students can further specialize within optional courses focused on specific issues of international relations and organizations, and also on foreign policy of specific countries and regions.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • understand theories of international relations and correctly use the terminology of the discipline;
  • understand the history of IR, Europe, and its main trends;
  • characterize the main dimensions of IR (economic, security, international law);
  • analyze foreign policy of states and European politics in selected regions;
  • orient themselves in basic methodologies of IR.

The IREP graduates can find employment in a number of professional areas, especially in large companies, international organizations, think-tanks, state administration and diplomatic service, apparatus of political parties and journalism.

The program's structure meets the requirements of the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). Requirements for successful passing of courses usually include final and midterm exams/tests, essays, position papers, and/or term papers.

Students are expected to participate in seminars well prepared due to regular reading and will be involved in in class discussions.

The grading scale adheres to ECTS principles and runs from the grade A (Excellent) to F (unacceptable). Grades A to E are passing grades.

To be allowed to register for the Bachelor's Final State Examinations, students must obtain 180 ECTS. According to Masaryk University requirements, these also must include the required number of Physical Education and English language courses. All the ECTS awarded for these courses are accounted for in the aggregate number of 90 ECTS from a single program.

Another requirement is to pass in the course of study at least one course taught in English per program.

Students of the undergraduate program in IR are required to earn 90 ECTS, out of which 58 are for required courses (if they write the diploma thesis in this program) and 50 if they submit their thesis in their other program.

Students who study exclusively the program in IR are required to earn 180 ECTS, 116 for required courses.

Students may take internships at various institutions in the Czech Republic as well as abroad. The may serve at both institutions with which the department has a memorandum or agreement of cooperation, or at institutions where they arranged for an internship on their own initiative (such an internship is subject to approval of the department head).

Serving as interns, students will improve their skills to apply their theoretical knowledge in practice, they will gain new practical skills, will learn teamwork as well as to work individually.

The Final State Examination in the IREP program is in the form of a written test. Aside from the defense of the final thesis (if applicable), the exam consists of two subjects - European Politics and International Relations. Before the exam, students will be informed of the topics included within the two subjects, from which the assigned questions will be derived.

Students who decide to write and defend their final thesis in the program are required to submit a text of at least 54,000 characters and must successfully defend it.
