History for Education“Discover your past” |
The study of History with a Focus on Education opens the way for students to understand various forms of social behaviour, social institutions, processes and relationships in the past. The studies in this field present history as a modern and socially beneficial academic discipline using the very latest information technology. They cover individual history disciplines, including auxiliary historical sciences, and also take in archaeological research at the Great Moravian hillfort in Znojmo and history excursions. Overall, these studies aim to develop professional, pedagogical, psychological, communicational and other personal and cultural skills as a basis for a subsequent Master’s degree in primary school teaching. The aim of the three-year Bachelor's programme is to prepare specialists with a university qualification for the profession of teaching assistant to a History teacher. The aim of these studies is active mastery of theoretical and practical knowledge and skills to enable the graduate to perform the profession in an independent and responsible manner. The studies in this field are conceived in such a way as to provide students with a comprehensive overview of history from prehistoric times, taking in the Middle Ages, the early modern age and the modern history of the 19th and 20th centuries. In the third year, students are acquainted with the genesis, development and fundamentals of the didactics of history. The student is able to characterise the main historical stages in the development of the didactics of history.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- work as a teaching assistant to a History teacher
- work as an instructor at a free-time centre
- perform instructional and remedial educational work
- work as a carer in a children’s home
- work as a carer at an after-school club
The knowledge, skills and attitudes acquired during these studies form a basis for the competence necessary for work as a teaching assistant to a History teacher and for instructional and remedial educational work. The given skills also represent full qualification for the work of an instructor at a free-time centre. It is anticipated that the majority of students will take subsequent Master’s degree studies in which they will extend their knowledge in synthesising subjects and expand their practical skills to take in additional special methods. Graduates of the study field History with a Specialisation in Education can also find opportunities in local government and non-profit organisations. Graduates can offer future employers both practical skills in the use of information technology and also language skills.
The standard period of study is 6 semesters and the student must meet the university requirements for the minimum language skills and, in the case of full-time studies, physical education, which also counts towards the total number of ECTS credits. To be able to take the final state examination the student must obtain 55 ECTS credits in the field in compulsory, selective and elective courses. Of the remaining credits, no more than 5 credits may be obtained by taking elective courses. During the course of their studies, students will be guided by the study catalogue for their matriculation year.
Professional practical training to the extent of one week in the third year is a compulsory component of these studies. Teaching practice is to be introduced into the Bachelor's programme in accordance with the new accreditation from 2017.
During the the final state History examination, students will demonstrate their theoretical knowledge of basic components of their subject specialisation, i.e. general and national medieval history, the history of the early modern age and general and national history of the 19th and 20th centuries. They will also demonstrate their knowledge of the formation and development of the didactics of history and the position of history as an integrating subject of social science education. The final state examination also includes the defence of a thesis, during which students will demonstrate their ability to formulate ideas and conclusions that provide at least some new knowledge of the subject studied. The final state examination is an oral examination. The purpose of this examination is to prove that the graduate is capable of holding a debate at an expert level. The aim is to demonstrate a general overview of basic concepts in individual disciplines and the broader connections between them.
Graduates of the bachelor study field History for Education may (after meeting the conditions for acceptance ) take a subsequent Master’s degree in the field of History Teaching for Primary School at the Faculty of Education at Masaryk University or a subsequent Master’s degree in the field of History at the Faculty of Arts at Masaryk University.
