The study programme Special Education for Upper Secondary School Teachers is taught in two combinations: Upper Secondary School Vocational Subject Teacher Training and Teacher Training in Special Education with an emphasis on vocational education. The aim of the programme is to prepare upper secondary school teachers for teaching two qualified subjects. The study consists of upper secondary school special education didactics with complementary disciplines. Pedagogical and psychological courses as a theoretical background of the qualified subjects are an equivalent part of the programme. Teacher Training in Special Education with an emphasis on vocational education is implemented in combined study mode and builds on the undergraduate study programme Teacher training in practical subjects. The study programme is not internally divided into specializations.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- use wide professional knowledge and skills of special education
- use field knowledge, communication skills and educational knowledge
- apply approaches to individuals with SEN in education (individualized approach, group activities, …)
- support class teachers in the education of students with SEN
- suggest and process the research concerning the education of students with SEN
Graduation guarantees the acquisition of competence in the education of students with special educational needs according to Act no. 379/2015 Coll. and its amendment no. 563/2004 Coll. on Teaching staff. The gained knowledge and skills may be applied in the field of special education, education in general, in public administration and in management. The employability of graduates is mainly focused on the field of upper secondary school teaching. These include mainly teachers of students with special educational needs at upper secondary schools, especially at vocational schools and practical schools (annual and biennial upper secondary study programmes).
General knowledge and skills in the field of: Education, Psychology, Foreign language in common core subjects, Research methodology. Special pedagogical knowledge and skills in the fields of: Psychopathology, Foundation of Addictology, Strategies in the education of students with special educational needs. Specialized knowledge and skills in the fields of: Education of students with mental, physical, visual and hearing impairment, speech disorders, specific learning disabilities and behavioural disorders. The standard study period is 2 years (4 semesters). To be able to take the final state examination, students must obtain a total of 120 credits in compulsory, selective and elective courses. Students are governed by the Study catalogue of their matriculation year. Access to the study catalogues can be reached through faculty websites.

The contents of the final state examination: Education and Psychology (common core content is ensured by the Department of Education and the Department of Psychology). Thesis defence (the topic should be always focused on special education even if the thesis is supervised by a different department). Within the final state examination the student chooses 2 questions from two required courses and 2 questions from elective courses (if chosen).
Required part: Strategy of education of students with special educational needs at upper secondary schools. Elective part: Specific learning disabilities.
There is the possibility of students extending their skills in the field of special education: Master's degree programme of Special Education divided into three specializations: Special education, Special education for teachers, Special education of adults (Special Andragogy) – single subject studies.
