The programme aims to prepare teachers for primary and secondary schools in music education (with a combination of two subjects) as a part of the subjects within aesthetic education. The programme provides students with broad-based knowledge and skills based on the field of music education and didactics, pedagogical and psychological disciplines with the support of current research findings, skills of reflection on the teaching process at the appropriate types and levels of schools, the skill of self-reflection in the teacher's role and acceptance of moral obligations and ethics of teaching.

The objectives of the study are to prepare graduates for the profession of music teachers in primary and secondary schools, to develop their basic attitudes and values so that they become active, responsible and independent members of their professional group, which works in aesthetic education.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • exercise the profession of music teacher in primary and secondary schools competently
  • base his/her professional conduct on a well strucured base of knowledge and skills in the field of music education
  • develop professional knowledge and skills based on an interdisciplinary perspective of related disciplines
  • develop basic attitudes and values in general and musical aesthetics in an effort to form the value orientation of young people
  • reflexively and critically think and act as a professionalist in music education.

The graduates are fully qualified to work as music teachers in primary and secondary schools and at the appropriate levels of grammar schools. Moreover, they are qualified to work in extracurricular (e.g. free-time) institutions.

The standard duration of studies is four semesters. For admittance to the final state examination students must obtain a total of 120 ECTS credits in required, selective and elective courses. The required courses constitute the basis of the discipline. Out of the elective courses students choose according to their interests and intended professional specialization. For all students there is an obligation to complete at least one course taught in English from the ones on offer at the department for the given level of studies.

During the course of their studies students should follow the "Study catalogue" for their year of matriculation. They can access the "Study catalogues" through the faculty website.

Teaching practice accompanied by supervision is an obligatory part of the curriculum for this field. Within this Master's degree programme, students pass through Teaching Practice I, II and III. Teaching Practice I and II are continuous practice within the first and second semesters, Teaching practice III is the block school practice in the third semester. For reflection on practice there are two subjects: Seminars for Teaching Practice I and II in the first and the second semesters.

The final state examination consists of theoretical and practical parts.

In the theoretical part, the student demonstrates his/her knowledge gained in the history of music, didactics of music education, the broader scientific basis (general and musical aesthetics, musical semiotics, musical sociology, musical forms) and choral conducting. The subjects of the state final examinations are based on the pillar disciplines of music education and didactics. In the practical part, the student must demonstrate a basic understanding of vocal and vocal-instrumental scores using formal, harmonic and expressive features as well as singing, instrumental accompaniment (piano and violin) and conducting - i.e. the student demonstrates his/her mastery of conducting techniques for a given score accompanied by a piano.

After completion of the Master's studies, it is possible to continue in doctoral studies (Ph.D.). At the Department of Music, Faculty of Education, Masaryk University applicants can study the programme Specialization in Pedagogy - Theory of Music and Pedagogy.
