After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• prove active deep professional knowledge of the branch and didactic disciplines in the field of Czech language and literature
• explain the specificity of theoretical and methodological attitudes to the issue of education of pupils with a different mother tongue in the process of teaching of Czech language and literature
• be familiar with the current educational concepts and methods of teaching of Czech language and literature
• apply the acquired knowledge and skills in teaching Czech language and literature in primary and lower secondary schools in compliance with didactic knowledge with the aim to develop key competences defined by RVP for elementary education
• independently plan, organize and carry out direct educational activity in the process of teaching of Czech language and literature in multicultural classes
• use various methods of testing and evaluation of people with a different mother tongue (in compliance with Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
• communicate with students with a different mother tongue effectively as well as with their parents or other participants in the educational process
• apply modern technology in the process of teaching, searching for and using appropriate sources of information and technologies independently, and use them critically at school
• provide consultations to solve problems related to the education of pupils with a different mother tongue both in the school and non-school environment (based on acquired knowledge, skills and diagnostic competencies)
• further develop and deepen his/her professional competencies through active self-study

The graduates of this study programme are fully qualified for direct pedagogical work as a teacher (or teaching assistant) of Czech language and literature in primary and lower secondary schools or at a corresponding stage of grammar schools with specialized qualification for teaching pupils with a different mother tongue. These competencies are also fully relevant for the work of a qualified teacher in language schools offering courses of Czech to foreigners; an instructor or skilled worker in centres for supporting the integration of foreigners; a teacher in centres for ethnic groups or in Czech teaching positions abroad as well as for work as an instructor in free-time or educational centres.

The Master's programme consists of language and literature studies, a teaching specialization in accordance with the standards of Masaryk University subjects (Master's thesis subjects, language training, physical education and other whole-university courses). The follow-up Master's programme of Teaching Czech language and literature with a focus on pupils with a different mother tongue is designed as a single-subject study programme with significant linguistic and didactical disciplines that are based on the position of the Czech language in the context of Slavic languages and the linguistic situation in Europe, and literary disciplines that deal with Czech literature in the European and world cultural and historical context.

The standard duration of the studies is four semesters. For admittance to the final state examination students must obtain a total of 120 ECTS credits in required, selective and elective courses. Required courses constitute the basis of the discipline and make up 81 credits (including credits for courses focused on writing a Master’s thesis). In the field-specific part of the studies students may obtain 12 credits in selective courses and 27 credits in elective ones. Another part of the curriculum is the subject called Internationalization in the field of Czech language and literature reflecting the international character of studies at MU.

Throughout the studies, students should follow the rules in the "Study catalogue" published on the faculty website .

A required part of study of this field is supervised teaching practice which meets the requirements for undergraduate training of teachers according to the framework plan for teacher education in primary and secondary schools. The system of teaching practice is designed to head towards long-lasting and systematical development of professional competencies in students as well as preparation for the role of a teacher. Teaching practice in the follow-up Master's programme is a continuation of the practice carried out in preparation for the role of teaching assistant in the Bachelor's studies. The required courses of teaching practice in a given field are: Teaching practice 2, Seminar for teaching practice 2 and Teaching practice 3 (see catalogue of courses).

The final state examination consists of two oral examinations and the defence of the Master's thesis (for information about the extent of the thesis see the faculty website; thesis topics are offered through the IS or after consultation with the supervisors of the thesis). The state examination consists of: Czech language and literature including the field didactics focusing on pupils with a different mother tongue (a list with the topics that will be tested is available on the department website), pedagogical and psychological basis for Master's studies (this is the same for all students from the Faculty of Education).

The field examination in the Czech language and literature consists of general linguistic text-analysis, answering a theoretical question concerning linguistics and answering a question concerning the didactics of Czech language and style with a focus on pupils with a different mother tongue (based on the list of topics). The oral examination in the field of Czech literature consists of answering a question involving the history of Czech literature from the beginning of literary production in Czechia until the present day as well as literary theory and a question concerning the didactics of literary education according to the topic list. Requirements for the successful completion of the examination of Czech literature are the ability to interpret literary works, taking into account their structural layers as well as the literary-historical context.

After completion of the Master's studies, it is possible to continue further studies in the doctoral study programme "Linguistic and literary communication" which is also available at the Faculty of Education (full-time or distant form of studies).
