The Political Science Master's study programme aims to broaden students' knowledge and skills in the sphere of political theories, political institutions and their functioning, electoral systems, political marketing, political mediation of interests, Czech politics and political management. The emphasis is put on the ability to analyse complex political phenomena and processes, and also critical thinking. Students obtain deeper knowledge within political science sub-disciplines. Moreover, they are encouraged to take an active part in departmental research projects.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • independently analyze political phenomena and processes
  • understand and analyze the key institutions of modern era and their development
  • design a political science research proposal aimed at investigating a specific political phenomenon and conduct the research
  • master qualitative and quantitative methods and specific methods of research in social sciences
  • design a political campaign
  • analyse data and critically evaluate relevance, quality and credibility of their sources

Graduates of the Political Science Master's study programme acquire knowledge and skills needed in a number of professional areas. Typical job opportunities include analytical and consultancy services in private and public sector institutions, education, state administration, local authorities, non-governmental organisations and political parties, and also in design and implementation teams for electoral and political campaigns. Moreover, the graduates can find employment within the European Union institutions and other international organizations. Another option is to pursue further career opportunities in specialized scientific projects within doctoral degree programmes.

The standard duration of studies in this study programme is four semesters. To be allowed to sit the final state exam, students must obtain a total of 120 ECTS credits for required, selective and elective courses. For students there is an obligation to complete at least one course taught through English and compatible with a given level of qualification. 4 credits must be earned for demonstrating the minimum required level of language competence.

The final state examination consists of a Master's thesis defence and a discussion about the thesis.

After completing their Master's degree, graduates can pursue further education in a doctoral study programme. At the Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University, they can apply for admission to the Political Science doctoral study programme.
