Master’s studies in Social Policy and Social Work promote understanding and practical application of nowadays approaches and methods of “social treatment” in social work and social policy. Attention is paid to organizations as well as other actors who take part in designing, implementing or administering the aforementioned approaches to social treatment. Students have opportunity to understand deeply selected approaches and methods of case social work and community social work. They are instructed to use theories of policy-making and implementing programs of social policy and social services as well as methods of evaluation of using social policy measures. Learning about research methods makes deeper those skills of students that are useful in reflecting on social problems, clients living situations and the ways of approaching them in practice.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- design and accomplish research on various aspects of helping interventions (i.e. case treatment or social policy program),
- assess clients living situations or social problems,
- design and accomplish helping intervention fitting the living situation of the client or the respective social problem circumstances,
- evaluate helping intervention,
- reflect on ethical problems and dilemmas of designing and doing helping intervention.
Graduates in Master’s studies in Social Policy and Social Work are qualified to work as specialist social workers, experts in the filed of social or social services policy-making or as researches in state, nongovernmental and commercial organizations. Using experience in performing the aforementioned roles, they can become teachers, especially in the tertiary education (after passing relevant studies in pedagogy when necessary). Acquiring practice experience, they can apply for job as a manager or program designers in social services, social work services, social security or employment organizations or nets in state, nongovernmental as well as commercial sector. As policy-makers or program managers, graduates can acquit well at (supra) national, regional as well as local level, for example in the government department of labor and social affairs, in (supra) national or regional centers of nongovernmental organization nets, in regional authorities or municipalities etc. Graduates are capable to perform the aforementioned roles and activities in all branches, sectors and fields of specialization. Passing one of the specialization they are obliged to choice in context of their Master’s studies, graduates acquire better preconditions to hold the aforementioned roles and activities in specialized fields of social policy making and program management (specialization „social policy“), social work services (specialization „social work“), designing and managing personal strategies and programs in state, nongovernmental as well as commercial organizations (specialization „personal management and organization development“), responding to problems of labor market and employment (specialization „labor market, employment policy and human resources development“).
Students have to make choice of one of the four specializations: (1) “social policy”, (2) “social work”, (3) “personal management and organization development”, (4) “labor market, employment policy and human resources development”. These specializations differ in terms of subject. However, their common feature is stress on practical usage of theoretical and multidisciplinary background of applied reflection on social problems, difficult living situations and strategies of approaching them in social policy and social work.
