The objective of the study is to develop and enlarge the knowledge and skills learned in the Bachelor’s degree study programme and to prepare the future philologist for work ensuing from the broader spectrum of Romances Studies. The student work is focused on the diachronic aspects of linguistic research, as well as on deepening the already-studied syntax, semantics, and stylistics. In literary criticism, students gain a broader and more complex perspective of the diverse methodologies of literary sciences, as well as an awareness and knowledge of the ampler context of Romance literatures and the place of Spanish and Spanish-language literature in it.

Input language competence is at the C1 level according to the CEFR; output language competence is at the C2 level.

The two-language and one-language focus of the study is in accord with the corpus of compulsory subjects. The pattern of both forms of study is the same; the difference is in the extent of the choice of compulsory subjects. The one-language form is broader, mainly in the preparation of another language from the Romance area, so students can earn credits for other Romance study areas.

Graduates of the one-language programme can broaden their knowledge and skills in their own area of study and in other or more Romance languages.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

produce dignified written and oral expression in Spanish
critically think and express thoughts both in their native language and Spanish
explain social, political, historical, literary, linguistic, and cultural situations in Spain and Latin America
use knowledge and awareness of other Romance language and other Romance areas

Graduates are able to produce dignified written and oral expression in Spanish. They are equipped with theoretical as well as pragmatic knowledge of social, political, cultural, historical, literary, and linguistic aspects of Spain and Spanish-speaking countries. Graduates can obtain knowledge and awareness of other Romance language and other Romance areas according to their own choice. Graduates can work professionally in their main area (translation, interpretation, language teaching, editing, publishing) and in areas requiring intellectual skills, such as being able to critically think and express thoughts both in their native language and Spanish.

The standard length of the study programme covers four semesters, and the diploma earned is a Master’s degree (Mgr.). Access to the final state examination requires 120 credits of type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses.

Type A/required courses are a total of 54 credits in the one-language course, and 34 credits for the two-language course. Other courses are chosen by the students according to their own interests and future orientation and their area of study or areas of study offered at Masaryk University.

It is compulsory to pass at least one subject in English, of those offered by the department.

During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the Faculty of Arts website.

The final state examination consists of: 1) defence of the final-year dissertation (in the area of choice); 2) a four-hour written examination, for which the student choses between linguistics or literary themes; and 3) an oral examination in linguistics, literary studies, and literary criticism.

After completing the Master’s degree study programme, it is possible to continue further studies in a doctoral degree study programme in Romance Languages, Romance Literatures, or other areas of postgraduate studies.
