The goal of the Master’s degree study programme is to develop and deepen the knowledge and skills acquired in the Bachelor’s degree study programme, and to prepare a philologist with a broader foundation in Romance studies. Students will focus on wider diachronic aspects of linguistic research and will concentrate upon a more complicated level of syntax, semantics and stylistics; in literary criticism, they will gain deeper insight into the methodology of literary scholarship and the awareness of a wider context of Romance literatures and the place of French and francophone literature in it. Enrolling students will have language mastery at the C1 level and graduates will have language mastery at the C2 level according to the CEFR.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- produce dignified written and oral expression in French at the C2 level according to the CEFR
- utilize detailed knowledge of the social, political, cultural, literary, and linguistic situations in France and other French-speaking countries
Graduates with this degree are capable of complex written and oral expression in French. They are equipped with a detailed and deep theoretical knowledge and practical skills related to the social, political and cultural situation in France and other French-speaking countries. They have good knowledge of another selected Romance language and country. In addition to working in the fields of translating, interpreting, editing, journalism, tourism, business, and mid-level and upper management, they are well-suited for any profession that demands the ability to think independently and critically and express themselves in both their mother tongue and French.
The standard duration of studies is two years, degree conferred: Master’s (Mgr.)
Major and minor studies are identical in the corpus of type A/compulsory subjects. The difference is in the range of type B/selective and type C/elective subjects. In the major studies, the amount of subject studies is larger, in particular for preparatory courses toward another Romance language, so that students can acquire required elective credits in other romance fields.
For admittance to the final state examination, students must earn a total of 120 ECTS credits for type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses. Type A/required courses form the basis of the discipline. Type B/selective and type C/elective courses can be earned in the field of French language and literature, in other Romance disciplines, or in other fields taught at Masaryk University.
All students are obliged to attend at least one course taught in English corresponding to the degree of studies.
During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the Faculty of Arts website.
The final state examination consists of: 1) the thesis defence (in major studies); 2) a written assignment - an essay written in four hours on a proposed linguistic or literary problem; and 3) an oral exam concerning defined linguistic, literary and critical items.
Graduates of the Master’s degree study programme may continue with a doctoral degree study programme in Romance languages, Romance literatures, or other appropriate doctoral studies.
