After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• demonstrate deep knowledge corresponding with the contemporary state of knowledge in the theory and history of theatre, enabling the original use and development of ideas
• understand the basic trends and tendencies of the theory and history of theatre in the area of interest
• demonstrate knowledge of the basic range and typology of resources, taking into account the specifics of theatre studies
• specify research practice in their own field of specialization, knowing the broader philosophical and aesthetic context
• define a comprehensive practical or theoretical problem and tackle it while using selected theories, concepts, and methods of theatre studies, including critical reflection
• analytically process the specified topic using individually chosen methods
• apply basic research methods allowing theatre studies to acquire new, original findings

Graduates find employment especially in creative and critical-analytical activities in the arts focusing on theatre in its various forms. Graduates are prepared to work in various research institutions, museums, archives, theatre archives, and theatres, and in the press, radio and television. Graduates are qualified to work in public relations in both the public and private spheres, as well as in the administration of culture and art, administration of cultural policy and cultural industries, as dramaturgs or journalists with a focus on arts and culture, editorial work, art and cultural criticism, and the management of culture and art. Graduates may work in the media or in institutions focusing on the performing arts, and on the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.

The standard duration of the studies is four semesters. Type A/required courses form the base of the courses professionally profiling study programme. Students choose type B/selective courses according to their interests and their future professional orientation. Students choose type C/elective courses from the current offer of optional courses within the field or from the offer of other disciplines. All students are also obliged to attend common compulsory courses. In order to be allowed to sit the final state exam, students are obliged to earn a total of 120 credits for type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses when enrolled in the single-subject study programme; 70 credits when enrolled in the double-subject study programme and writing their thesis at the department of Theatre Studies; 50 credits when enrolled in the double-subject study programme and writing a non-diploma thesis. A student in the single-subject study programme, who is required to earn 120 credits, earns a total of 28 credits for type A/required courses, 46 credits for type B/selective courses, 37 credits for the thesis and courses related to the writing of the thesis, 5 credits for type C/elective courses from the current offer of optional courses within the field or from the offer of other disciplines and 4 credits for common compulsory courses. A student in the double-subject study programme, who is required to earn 70 credits, earns a total of 23 credits for type A/required courses, 9 credits for type B/selective courses, 37 credits for the final thesis and courses related to writing the thesis, and 4 credits for common compulsory courses. A student in the double-subject study programme without the thesis, who is required to earn 50 credits, earns a total of 23 credits for type A/required courses, 15 credits for type B/selective courses, 10 credits for the final thesis and courses related to the writing of the thesis, and 4 credits for common compulsory courses. During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the Faculty of Arts website.

To complete the Master’s degree study programme, it is necessary to successfully pass the final state examination. The final state examination consists of two parts: the defence of the Master’s thesis or the submission of the non-diploma thesis, and the oral exam testing the knowledge of the history of Czech theatre and world theatre as well as theatre theory (topics are available on the website of the Department of Theatre Studies). A student in the Master’s degree study programme receives reviews from the supervisor and the opponent prior to the exam and prepares a written or oral defence. The Master’s degree topics are: 1) history of Czech theatre; 2) history of world theatre; and 3) theory of theatre and drama. The defence of the thesis is a part of the final state examination for diploma studies. The length of the core text of the thesis is 140,000 characters. For the non-diploma study programme, submitting a non-diploma thesis of 55,000 characters of the core text (non-diploma theses are not to be defended) is required. Both the oral and written parts of the Master’s degree exam and defence of the thesis are evaluated by two separate marks. All three areas of the oral final state examination are evaluated by one final mark.

After completing the Master’s degree study programme, it is possible to continue further studies in a doctoral degree study programme in the theory and history of theatre, film and audio-visual culture, or in any related field if the conditions for admission are fulfilled.
