After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• be a qualified expert in fine arts focusing on music
• have advanced knowledge of art-disciplines (aesthetics, semiotics, music theory)
• do independent research work, theoretical reflection and application of research results in the field
• publish specialised and popular texts reflecting the results of their professional work and their presentations at conferences, symposia and seminars

The Doctoral Degree Programme in the field of study Musical Theory and Pedagogy forms the preconditions for graduates’ deeper specialization for working at upper secondary schools and universities and in institutions related to music culture.

The standard duration of studies is six semesters. For admittance to the final state examination students must obtain a total of 180 ECTS credits in required, selective and elective courses. Required courses constitute the basis of the discipline (Aesthetics and General Theory of Art, Applied Musical Semiotics and Semantics, Relations Between Particular Kinds of Art, Musical Pedagogy, Musical Psychology). Out of the selective subjects students always choose one of each pair (Sociological Aspects of Musical Culture - Semantic Analysis of Musical Works; Foreign Language at level B1 - Visual art of the 20th Century). Out of the optional courses students choose according to their interests and intended professional specialization. In each semester, students always enrol in the subject Professional Orientation in the Field of Study and Preparation of Dissertation. For all students there is an obligation to complete at least one course in a Foreign Language at level C1 (English, German, French or Russian). During the course of their studies students should follow the study catalogue. They can access the study catalogues through the faculty website.

Teaching practice is not an obligatory part of the study plan.

The final state examination consists of an oral examination and dissertation defence.

Doctoral students are expected to demonstrate their professional orientation and their ability to produce independent creative work in the field. Thematic areas of the oral examination are based on the completed disciplines (general music and aesthetics, semiotics, the relationship between art forms, music theory, music pedagogy and psychology).
