The aim of the study of German Language and Literature is to develop and deepen the knowledge and skills the students received in the previous studies, especially with respect to the philologic reflexion of language and literature in the broader context of history and culture.
Students will focus on the broader context of the relevant disciplines in German studies; these include wider diachronous aspects of linguistic research, a more advanced level of syntax, lexicology, and stylistics; in literary criticism the students will get deeper insight into modern and contemporary literature and into the methodology of literary scholarship, as well as an awareness of the wider context of literature and the place of German literature within it.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- perform receptive and productive tasks based on texts in German and Czech
- translate texts from and into German
- use the language competence as well as knowledge of social, political, and cultural situations in German-speaking countries in various working positions with relevance for these areas
Graduates with this degree are qualified for expert and language-oriented jobs in companies and institutions, in publishing houses and various branches of the media, and in archives, libraries, museums, theatres, and travel agencies, as language experts and alternatively in diplomacy. Further job opportunities involve translating, interpreting and teaching language courses.
The standard duration of studies is four semesters. For admittance to the final state examination, students must earn a total of 120 ECTS credits for type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective courses. Type A/required courses constitute the basis of the discipline, type B/selective courses can be chosen by the students according to their interests and intended professional specialization. The type C/elective courses can be chosen from those offered in the curriculum of the given study programme or from other courses offered by any other study programme.
During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the Faculty of Arts website. The information about the courses as well as the specific conditions of the registration are published in the ‘registration templates’ for the respective study.
The final state examination consists of two parts: a written exam covering scholarly writing on a chosen topic from German philology (with the opportunity to prepare based on a previously published broader list of topics and an oral exam covering presentation and discussion on an assigned topic from German linguistics and literature (based on the published list of topics). The final state examination also includes the defence of the thesis.
