Special Education is seen as the science of special education of an individual with special needs who requires a special educational approach while being educated as well as support in employment and the social dimension. The objective of special education is to prepare special educational needs teachers, carry out research and provide further education. The current conception of the education and training of physically handicapped pupils is more and more directed towards the field of inclusive approach in the complex interdisciplinary conception. Diagnostics, intervention, education, training and counselling are provided by special educational needs teachers, not only within the field of education but also in other areas (the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs and the Ministry of the Interior). The current concept of special education deals with the problems of individuals with special needs from their birth up to old age, i.e. the periods of early and pre-school age, school age, adolescence, adulthood and old age. The basic focus of the degree programme, namely Special Education, is to prepare specialists with a broad social scientific scope of knowledge focused on pedagogical and psychological disciplines. The study field runs both in full-time and distant modes. It is divided into six selective specializations which are focused on counselling, diagnostics and intervention with regard to a chosen range of individuals with special educational needs. These include intellectual disability, physical disability and multiple disability, speech disorders and visual impairment as well as behavioural disorders. Specific learning disabilities are an optional part of the specialization.

The studies comprise a special basic university course with emphasis on application within the field. The Special Education study field is prepared in accordance with the Accreditation Commission Standards for the Special Education degree programme as currently amended. The common core subjects are an equal part of the studies including psychological, pedagogical, communicational (including a foreign language) and general culture courses. It is completed with special and pedagogical and psychological practical training. Pedagogical and psychological disciplines prepare students for educational work.
