Geometry

Beauty is the first test: There is no permanent place in the world for ugly mathematics. (G. H. Hardy)

The study programme of Geometry focuses on differential geometry, global analysis, and algebraic topology. An important role is played by the topic of the Master's thesis. It determines not only the choice of lectures, but also the direction of further independent studies of the specific parts of the disciplines. The aim of the studies is to introduce basic notions and methods of disciplines connected with modern differential geometry. Besides these broader foundations the graduates will have a deeper knowledge of the branch of their Master's thesis.

The graduates are educated in the problems of fundamental as well as advanced disciplines of classical mathematical analysis, algebra, geometry, and topology.

(?)

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • formulate and solve particular problems in an independent and creative way
  • use good abstract thinking, geometrical imagination, and conceptual thinking
  • do independent scientific research in abstract as well as in applied mathematical fields and their specializations
  • explain basic notions and methods of disciplines connected with modern differential geometry
(?)
The graduates are qualified for basic and applied research, for managerial professions, and for all spheres where both theoretical and practical knowledge of mathematics is required - specifically in institutions of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, and at universities as well as in institutions using applied mathematical methods. They can work especially in areas of basic research, university teaching, creation of geometrical models in technical and scientific branches, and in software development.

1. Each semester the students should enrol in courses worth at least 20 credits;

2. In the course of their studies enrol in all required courses which are divided into three groups: basic (37 credits), Master's thesis (30 credits), and English language (2 credits);

3. Enrol in selective courses which are worth at least 17 credits; and

4. Choose a topic of the Master's thesis before the end of the 3rd week of the first semester.
