Mathematics with Informatics“Behind a great programme, there is great mathematics” |
The study programme of Mathematics with Informatics is designed to prepare specialists who are able to employ their knowledge of mathematics and theoretical computer science in practice - for designing and analysing computer systems and programmes. During their studies, the students are introduced to the basics of computer science disciplines and they obtain a deeper knowledge of mathematical disciplines which are often used in computer science. The emphasis is placed on mastering the knowledge and techniques needed for the independent creation of algorithms based on solid mathematical foundations and their theoretical analysis.
After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:
- evaluate the architecture of computer systems
- construct effective algorithms
- explain ideas using mathematical formalism
- design computer programmes requiring a deeper theoretical knowledge
- use known concepts for solving problems in multidisciplinary branches
- obtain new knowledge and methods quickly
The graduates of this study programme can find employment mainly as the team members working on the borders of branches, especially in the basic and applied research, or as designers of software and mathematical models.
The standard duration of studies is four semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination students must earn a total of 120 ECTS credits for required and elective courses. Required courses constitute the basis of the discipline and make up 77 credits (including credits for courses focusing on writing a Master’s thesis). Further 19 credits have to be earned in optional courses offered by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, and by the Faculty of Informatics - these are chosen by students according to their interests and intended professional specialization. The remaining 24 credits can be earned in optional courses offered in the study plan of the given study programme, or in courses offered in any other study programme.
During the course of their studies students should follow the Course Catalogue for their year of matriculation. They can access the Course Catalogues through the faculty website.
The final state examination consists of the defence of the Master's thesis and an oral examination. During the defence of Master's thesis, the understanding of the topic of the thesis and the quality of presentation are evaluated. During the oral examination, students should demonstrate their understanding of basic concepts and results from various branches and relationships between them. Students have to answer three questions, one from each of the following areas: Mathematics - Basics, Mathematics - Algorithms, and Computer Science.
More information about graduation requirements can be found on the department's website: "http://www.math.muni.cz/pro-studenty/studium-magisterske-studium/312-mgr-szz-obor-mat-inf.html".
After completion of the Master's studies, it is possible to progress to any doctoral degree programme (after satisfying the admission requirements). At Masaryk University students can apply for admission to various programmes within the doctoral degree programmes of Mathematics and Informatics.
