The goal of the study is to give students full theoretical and experimental background in classic and modern problems of condensed matter and prepare them for a profession of a physicist specialized in this favoured discipline. The graduates receive general education in experimental and theoretical physics of solids. They study the structure of crystals, metals, semiconductors and insulators and attend systematic education in an area of microscopic models of electronic and vibrational structure of solids. Specialized lectures are given on bulk semiconductor and supraconductive materials. The graduates learn basic technologies of crystal growth and deposition of thin coats. In courses of analytical methods they get familiar with X-ray structure analysis, measurement of electric properties, optical spectroscopy and ellipsometry in a wide spectrum from far infrared to ultraviolet wavelengths.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • utilize the basic knowledge of physical world, especially at the microscopic level
  • widen and deepen the acquired knowledge
  • solve independently related problems in theoretical, experimental and applied research
(?)

Graduates can find jobs as independent creative workers in institutions of basic and applied research in the area of condensed matter, and also in research, development and production branches of companies. Some of the graduates can continue in a doctoral study programme.

(?)

The standard duration of studies is four semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination students must obtain a total of 120 ECTS credits for required, selective and elective courses. During the whole course of their studies, students work on their diploma theses. They should follow the Course Catalogue for their year of matriculation. They can access the Course Catalogues through the faculty website.

(?)

The final state examination is oral. It examines the students' knowledge in two groups of topics: 1) general physics and 2) condensed matter physics, based on the offered courses.

The exam topics are specified in the list of subject areas and recommended literature, see http://www.physics.muni.cz.

The state examination includes the defence of a diploma thesis, which should aim to give some original results.

(?)

The study prepares to follow up with doctoral studies at universities or institutes of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
