After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• formulate and solve particular problems in an independent and creative way;
• explain and use principal geological terminology in logical context and deduce new information;
• recognize principal minerals, rocks, fossils used in prehistory, interpret these products from geological point of view, select method for instrumental analysis;
• use geological research methods including geological documentation of archaeological localities, sampling, data processing etc., choose the best method for problem solving;
• solve independently archaeological problems using complex geological methods, interpret results of the research in relation to other information, and present the outcomes in written and oral form.

The graduates are qualified for basic and applied research, for managerial professions and for the spheres where both theoretical and practical knowledge of geology is required, namely in institutes for the preservation of archaeological monuments, Institute of Archaeology of the Czech Academy of Sciences and other archaeological institutions, Institute of Geology of the Czech Academy of Sciences, in education, municipal departments of culture or environment or in museums.

It is a joint-degree study programme combining Geology and Archaeology.

The standard duration of the studies is four semesters. To get admitted to the final state exam, students must obtain a total of 120 credits for compulsory, selective and elective courses. They have to obtain credits for all compulsory courses and a certain number of optional courses, so that the total number of the credits is at least 120. During the course of their studies students should follow the Study catalogue for their year of matriculation. They can access the Study catalogue through the faculty website.

Practical training linked to compulsory courses is an obligatory part of the study plan for this study programme. Landscape research training and excursions represent optional components of the study plan.

The final state exam consists of two parts: 1) theory examination (usually oral) in both Geology and Archaeology and 2) defence of the Master's thesis on a topic that involves either Geology or Archaeology.

The theory exam measures the knowledge obtained in compulsory courses.

Master's thesis on geological topics may be submitted in Czech, Slovak or English.

Graduates can pursue their studies in several doctoral study programmes.
