The standard duration of studies is six semesters. To be admitted to the final state examination students must obtain a total of 180 ECTS credits for the required courses and the Bachelor's thesis, and for the selective, recommended elective geographical and other elective courses. Required courses and Bachelor's thesis constitute the basis of the discipline and profile courses of the programme. Selective courses are divided into two large blocks from which students choose in the spring term of the second year according to their interests and intended professional specialization - they can choose the study programme of Physical Geography or Human Geography. The sum of credits from both groups of courses represents 131 credits. Students further select from the group of recommended optional geographical/cartographic courses in which they have to earn at least 18 credits in the given study programmes. Remaining 31 credits can be earned in courses offered in the given study programme of Geography and Cartography (if it is allowed), from elective language courses, sport courses, or from other courses offered by any other study programme at the Faculty of Science or other university faculties.

During the course of their studies students should follow the Course Catalogue of Geography for the given school year. They can access the Course Catalogues of other programmes or faculties through the faculty/University website.

Studies are completed with the state Bachelor's examination consisting of the defence of the Bachelor's thesis and knowledge examination (written and oral). The prerequisite for the state Bachelor's examination is earning at least 180 credits of the defined structure, successful completion of courses connected to the Bachelor's thesis and related courses, obtaining the minimum number of credits from all groups of required, selective, and elective courses specified in the previous point, and the submission of the Bachelor's thesis.

In their Bachelor's theses students show their ability to solve problems of medium difficulty, including working with literature, elaboration and interpretation of results, and their presentation. Data used for the preparation of the Bachelor's thesis can be obtained from any institution or from student' own field research or investigation. Topics of Bachelor's theses are announced by the Department of Geography on the basis of staff proposals, and their current offer is published in the Information System of Masaryk University. Students choose the topic from this offer; however, they have also the possibility to suggest their own topic to the potential supervisor. Content and formal attributes of the Bachelor's thesis are then determined in specific instructions.

The knowledge part of the state Bachelor's examination consists of the written examination in the basics of geography and cartography, which verify the complex knowledge obtained in the compulsory geographical courses concentrated in 10 areas. According to their specializations students sit for their examinations in Physical Geography or Human Geography. These examinations test knowledge in the areas of selective courses of the given specialization.
