The aim of the study programme in Upper Secondary School Teacher Training in Italian Language and Literature is to prepare qualified and competent teachers of Italian Language and Literature who are comprehensively educated for teaching at secondary schools where Italian is taught as a foreign language. Graduates are equipped with the knowledge, skills, and competences required for theoretical study, application disciplines, practical language knowledge and skills, and literary and cultural vision. Input language competence is at the C1 level according to the Common European Framework Reference; output language competence is at the C2 level.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • produce dignified written and oral expression in Italian at the C2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages
  • use his detailed knowledge of social, political, cultural, literary and linguistic situation in Italy;
  • plan, prepare, analyse, and evaluate the teaching of the Italian language in secondary school

Graduates find positions at secondary schools of various types and orientations as well as in special language schools where Italian as a foreign language is taught.

The standard length of studies is two years, concluding with a Master’s degree (Mgr.).

To access the final state exam, students must earn a total of 120 credits for type A/required, type B/selective and type C/elective subjects.

Type A/required courses form the basis of the discipline. Their proportion is 20 credits in the common pedagogical-psychological courses and 62 credits for major studies and 56 credits for minor studies in didactics, linguistics, and literature.

Other type B/selective and type C/elective credits can be earned in School Teacher Training in Italian Language and Literature, in other Romance disciplines, or in other fields taught at Masaryk University.

All students are obliged to attend at least one course taught in English. During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available on the faculty website.

Students receive a consecutive four weeks of practical training including practice classroom lesson didactics with a tutor teacher. Feedback reflection is an integral part of didactics.

The state examination consists of:

1. the defence of the thesis;

2. a test of the subject-field-component studies including didactics approbation discipline; It consists of a final, four-hour written essay depending on the student’s choice of language and literature focus that tests the ability of students to address a professional topic and an oral exam that focuses on theoretical knowledge and knowledge of the Italian language and literature and didactics of Italian.

3. a written exam of pedagogical-psychological subjects.

Graduates may continue on to a doctoral degree study programme in Romance languages, Romance literatures, or other appropriate doctoral studies.
