The objective of this Bachelor’s degree study programme is to equip future graduates with knowledge of the socio-pedagogical, psychological, sociological, and counselling disciplines that are a necessary prerequisite for the ability to understand, describe, and interpret socio-pedagogical observations. Completion of the programme provides understanding of various forms of social behaviour, institutions, forces, and relations. The objective is the acquisition of competencies that allow participation in planning, completion, and evaluation of educational, social, and counselling processes in various types of environments, and with varying levels of diversification among target audiences. The study programme will also provide students with essential research skills, both theoretical and practical.

After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

  • acquire competencies that enable participation in planning, completion, and evaluation of educational, social, and counselling processes in various types of environments, and with varying levels of diversification among target audience
  • offer guidance for overcoming difficult life situations of clients
  • complete simple research soundings (e.g. action research)
  • obtain competence in self-education and self-reflection
  • respect and account for age-related, individualistic, or other unusual oddities of clients
  • organize, create, and complete projects and programmes for both individual and collective development

The graduates of this study programme are able to promote and organize socio-educational and counselling activities, planning and creating programmes and projects for individual and collective development.

The standard duration of studies is six semesters. For admission to the final state examination, students must obtain a total of 180 ECTS credits in type A/required, type B/selective, and type C/elective units. During the course of their studies, students should follow the study catalogue valid for their year of matriculation. The study catalogues for the individual years of matriculation are available at the Faculty of Arts website.

A mandatory part of the curriculum is the completion of three separate kinds of practical training. It is possible to undertake the training beginning in the second semester of the degree. The department of educational sciences has a longstanding collaboration with a number of pedagogic, guidance, and social work practices, which provide possible placements for students.

The final state examination consists of two parts- an oral defence of the written Bachelor’s thesis and a formal oral exam. More information can be found on the department’s website:

Following the completion of the Bachelor’s study programme, it is possible for graduates to enter into the Master’s degree programme (i.e. Social Education and Counselling, or possibly another associated degree programme with a liberal arts focus), provided that its admission requirements are satisfied. Admission requirements are set individually by each faculty or institute of higher education.
