The current approach towards the education and teaching of the students with handicaps is more and more focused on the inclusive approach in a comprehensive understanding of it. The range of academic activities is focused on a wide age group – from young learners to the elderly. The conception of the study of special education is a reflection of a society-wide effort to integrate children/students with special educational needs into regular schools (see school law 561/2004 no. 82/2015).

The goal of the special education field is to prepare special educators for special education activities in classrooms that are established for students with special educational needs in primary and lower secondary schools, in schools for students with special needs, in special schools in role as a teaching assistant, in school establishments, in preschools with education for children with special needs, in children's homes, youth centres and for activities in social care centres. The field is taught in daily and combined modes. The study field Special education is divised based on the standards of the Accreditation Committee for the field of Special Education. It is divided into 6 specializations combined of two fields – speech therapy in the education of pupils with hearing impairments, mental impairments in combination with the education of pupils with physical disabilities, visual impairment, behavioural problems, and also speech therapy and adult health handicaps. These specializations form the basis for the follow-up Master's degree.
