After successfully completing his/her studies the graduate is able to:

• write and speak Ukrainian language at the C2 level according to the CEFR
• use deep knowledge of literary and cultural theories and the literature and culture of Ukraine as well as Slavonic countries (according to their choice)
• use their deep knowledge of diachronic and synchronic linguistic theories, including the history of the Ukrainian language
• work independently and conduct critical analyses.

Graduates with this degree have a comprehensive philological and area studies education, which qualifies them for educational and scholarly jobs, jobs in cultural institutions, in tourism, and in journalism, as specialists in editorial boards, in low- and mid-level management in firms, in translating specialized and literary texts, in interpreting, and as experts.

Type A/required courses: Students deepen and extend their knowledge of Ukrainian language asobtained in their Bachelor’s degree study programme. Theoretical courses concentrate on stylistics and the historical development of Ukrainian language. Students also familiarize themselves with the basics of the Old Church Slavonic language, as well as with Slavonic languages from a diachronic perspective, and with Graeco-Latin terminology.

Literary courses broaden their knowledge of Slavonic literatures. Students have to take a two-semester Master’s thesis seminar.

Type B/selective courses: Students have to earn at least 11 credits. They choose these courses from the offer for their study programme. They can, for example, practise technical translation, attend specialized literary or culturally oriented seminars and lectures, or alternatively, they can learn the basics of another Slavonic language.

Students can, within the type B/selective course in Professional Practical Training, work as trainees in Ukrainian-Czech companies.

The Master’s degree final state examination consists of an oral exam in Ukrainian language and an oral exam in Ukrainian literature.

The Bachelor’s degree final state examination is preceded by the Bachelor’s degree thesis defence.

The final state examination tests students’ knowledge of the Ukrainian language (morphology, syntax, its historical development) and 19th and 20th century Ukrainian literature. The knowledge and skills required in the exam are based on the content of the Master’s degree and the Bachelor’s degree study programme.

Students have some time to prepare answers to the assigned questions before the beginning of the oral exam.

After completing the Master’s degree study programme, it is possible to continue further studies in a doctoral degree study programme in Theory and History of Slavonic Literatures, Paleoslavonic and Slavonic Languages, or Philological Area Studies.
